Looking at buying a hybrid to get to work on, I have an old GT 4000 iDrive that I occasionally ride but really want to increase my fitness for next year ( not getting any younger!)

Now Ive really taken a liking to the Specialized San Fran 2, but noticed its got a 3 speed hub.
Now I know most atb's hardly use the granny ring etc but has anyone got any experience with these, are they good/bad/indifferent?

Thanks
Steve

I guess it depends on what ratios those 3 speeds equate to and what kind of riding you're planning to do. Soundslike an extended test-ride would be in order.

Thanks for the reply...

Gone and bought it anyways! Saved £110 off list and had the frame size I need (only 5'7")

Hopefully it wont be a complete b'stard, Ive got an enormous hill to climb to get out to the main road.
I know lower gears may be more sensible but I love the look of the thing and Ive done it now!

My next obstacle is the missus who is dead against me cycling to work (she works for a brain injury specialist and says most of their clients are/were cyclists redface ) though she was fine with me owning and her pillion on my motorbikes.....

The chance of a brain-altering crash while riding is much lower than the chance of heart disease if you don't.

Anyway, well done on a great looking bike.

It would have to be pretty serious to get on their books!! OT but last week I tripped on our dogs bed and hit my head on a wall mounte radiator. Missus heard the noise and stood there laughing! Later while telling one of her friends, still laughing, my 3 year old with a serious looking face shouted "Not funny, Daddy hurt his head" and stormed off! So much for professional care eh? smile

Looking forward to it arriving, I'll stick some pics up of the two on the other thread next week.

I actually burst out laughing at the thought of all medical professionals laughing and point at accident injuries as they come through the door... might make a good, dark comedy series.

Anyway, nice looking bike...I'm wishing I went for a single speed MTB framed bike instead of race bike frame.

A lower spec version - san fran 1 - has single speed and can be got for around £240... I liked the black smile and the additional spec that came with it.
I was looking at race bikes (Raleigh Airlite 100/200) but I'm not a fan of lycra, still enjoy fooling around on bikes and would probably break it quite quickly!
