Jesus Christ! I set the stopwatch this morning. I was nearly 10 minutes slower than my best time in the autumn - over a half hour stretch. frown
My best in the summer was around 28 minutes for 7.5 miles. Hardly managed one commute over Dec/early January and when I got back in the saddle was in the 37-38 min range. Five commutes in I'm now back down to to around 32 mins. So still 15% slower. A lot of that is down to wet/slippery roads, wet/ineffective brakes and and massively increased stopping distances since November-ish. So basically I end riding much more slowly. And losing fitnes. And getting a bit bored.

The last few days have been dry and I've been back out of the saddle pounding away again. Roll on drier weather and sub-30 banzai rides.

Right back on the pace now. Did two commutes three weeks ago, five two weeks ago, three last week and three this week (210 miles total) and also had the bike serviced so braking and changing gears much better.

Result? Yesterday and today I was down in the low-mid 29's. Less than a minute off my summer best.

So there's no excuse :-)

I commute all year round regardless of weather. It's snowing here now and I'm looking forward to going out in it.

I think the bike makes a big difference to the time you can do a commute, my old raleigh weighed over 3 stones and was slow up hills, the pedals lacked grip and the crank was well worn, my current trek 4300 is nice and light up hill, although the forks seem to have stiffened up just recently and the rebound is slow (could this be the cold weather I wonder)

Have you used the calculator? I'm either a 4 or a 5 depending on the state of my chops / stubble / beard.

True. I am averaging just over 15mph on old slick-shod steel-framed Diamondback. I could probably add another 2-3 mph on something like a modern hybrid or road bike.

But I'm not bothered as I'm in this for the cardio exercise and fat burn and an average of 15mph on my bike = lots of both :-)

Damn I get 11, party the chops, mostly from cycling in my scruffy work gear must work harder. Next power ranger I see going for his lucozade I'll have him on the straight.
