After much hammering, swearing, knuckle-rash, hammering some more and finally drilling, I at last got that pesky cotter-pin out.

Now my local bike shop really is local; it's right at the end of the road, 200yds max, so I really have no excuse for never having been in there - although I am notoriously tight and begrudge spending money on anything really, especially bicycles.

So anyway, having uncharacteristically decided to give the old wallet an airing, I bowled into said LBS bracing myself to buy a shiny new cotter pin. So how surprised was I when they didn't have one?

No call for them anymore, said the bloke. He had a look out the back and found one without a taper, but that was it.

Obviously I then scoured the shed and found an old rusty pin from something else - like I should have done in the first place, but this did leave me wondering...

Are all bike shops rubbish now, or was it just this one?

Is nobody fixing/rebuilding old bikes anymore?

No, they just can't make a living by selling defunct cheap bits to tightwads who visit them once every few years..

You need to find an old crap bike shop that sells cheap kids bikes & prams or some kind of 'bicycle repair co-operative' that deals in knackered ancient bikes.
