so 500-600 then? have a look further up the thread at the wheelies direct link - with the 15% tribe discount are there any bargains in there?
Wheelies are just box shifters. It's won't be set up properly, hell, they want you to assemble it yourself (does the average buyer know how?). At least that is how they used to be, and you would see lots of people with brand new bikes with problems...

I am sure I can get you 15% or better easy enough.

In my opinion the Specialized Hardrock Pro or Felt Q620 seem slightly better than the GT, Scott & Cannondale. Most manufacturers seem to have down specced to cheaper Suntour forks and 24 (down from 27) speed transmission this year. Not so with the Decathlon or Boardman though

Like the Subway and I'm a fan of Rebas but only on a bike designed to take suspension forks - otherwise it will completely change the riding position and ruin the steering angle.
Subway will take a 100mm Reba. Or if need be, rearrange the spacers and run them 80mm. More than enough travel to cope with 85% of the mtb riding in the UK.

Thanks for clarifying - I wasn't sure. Totally agree re. 80-100mm forks being sufficient for most riding.

I looked on ebay last night - plenty of specialized bikes around the 300-600 mark, some decent fairly new bikes as well.

I'd imagine the Cycle to Work scheme must have really helped on this front - lots of fat people buying £800 - £1,000 bikes with great aspirations of becoming superfit. 12 months later the bike's still sitting in the garage completely unloved and never been used. There must be some great potential bargains out there at the moment.

Looking at the specs the Rockrider 8.1 has even better forks and groupset than the Boardman, comes fitted with SPDs as standard and at £499 is £50 cheaper! A similar specced bike from a mainstream manufacturer will cost you around £700 these days.
