If you cycle along a road, at night, in dark clothing, with no lights, and no reflectors you are officially a Darwin candidate, especially if the road you are on is unlit...

I saw 2 cyclists on the way home from the gym this evening; both fitted the above description.

(This is not a rant, just an observation.)

I just nearly got one of these as I was coming home tonight. I didn't even aim for him either because I only saw him at the very last minute.

This really annoys me, too. It's so foolish; not only are they more likely to get hit, but it's further ammo for the driving bores who'd sooner brake for a baby rabbit than a cyclist.

If there's nobody else about, I usually just switch my car's lights off as I pass. A briefer version of this seems to be the most effective way of telling other car drivers their lights are off, so hopefully it works for cyclists too (if they're not too drunk to notice).

Car drivers ! Please remember,if you ride your crappy old bike, the one you take out once or twice a year, along a road, at night, in dark clothing, with no lights, and no reflectors you are officially a Darwin candidate, especially if the road you are on is unlit...that proper cyclists are laughing at you.

To be fair, there are enough drivers who do the same kind of thing. Driving back from Gatwick in the pissing rain on Sunday afternoon, the number of cars without any lights on at all was staggering.

Car drivers ! I realise it's stating the bleeding obvious, and how fking tedious that can be, but please, please, please remember, if you drive your car without lights at night on an unit road, you might get hit by another car, particularly if that other car also doesn't have its lights on.

Hope this helps.

When I was a kid, I used to live in fear of a cop car pulling me over on my bike if I didnt have lights on at night - have the police given up trying to police these pests or is there simply nothing can be done about it.

Fixed penalty fines should apply to cyclists, cars, lorries, motorbikes etc etc etc all the same in my opinion - If you arent kitted out correctly for the road, dont use it!

As a cyclist, I have been made aware on this forum by certain people that all you have to do is simply deploy your defensive cycling and you'll be OK.

I was once told, by a biker, that were two sorts of biker: careful, responsible, defensive thinking riders and organ donors.

There are also the same kinds of drivers and cyclists.

Loony or fluffy they achieve the same aim: becoming a Darwin-Award candidate.

Indeed. Because there is a real danger that someone who is as much of a as you is driving a car on the same bit of road.

I want one one! bounce

It's true, people cycling on unlit roads without lights are Darwin candidates, but is that really news to anyone? It's frightening how little you can see of kamikaze pedestrians who randomly decide to step out in to the road at night too. To be hoenst though - as a driver - I can't help thinking that a fallen tree wouldn't show up in your headlights any better, so maybe you better think a bit more about what you can actually see at night if unexpected shapes are looming out of the darkness on unfamiliar roads?

I think the same all the time. A pair of lights cost little more than a packet of fags/lunch/pint etc so why not fit them.

It's more annoying for us cyclists that have lights because it makes motorists want to kill us even more hehe
