I'm looking for a decent bike mount for an iPhone 3gs so I can use the GPS function on it to find alternative commuting routes (without getting lost).

I need a mount that will fit on the stem as I have carbon fiber bars that do not have much "round section" spare.

I've got a Ram bike mount

It works great on road and mountain bikes and can cope with the rougher surfaces. You can fit it on the stem or bars no problem.

That's the omnly one I've seen that looks any good to be honest. Is there sufficient room in the mount for a thin silicon cover that I'll have on the iPhone?

The only other one I saw that looked much good was the Dahon bike mount which is perhaps more water resistant.

I think the Dahon was only available in the US at the time I was looking, I got the RAM as it had good reviews and was smaller.

Using the GPS with wifi and push etc switched off and the resolution turned down, I get about 2.5 - 3 hours battery with the iphone GPS on. I tend to use the trails application.

That's cool, my commute is an hour max, once at the office I can plug in to charge.

Do you mean like a screen protector or some kind of complete case?

The mount 'clips' the phone in place at the top by a hard but slightly bendy plastic clip. In the interests of science, I just wrapped my phone in a plastic bag and clipped it in no problem.

Something like this - http://www.wrappz.com/productdetails.php?proid=157...

or a thin silicone skin (about 1-2mm thick.

If the first link is just a sticker on the front and back then that would be OK.

I doubt something 1-2mm thick would work though. I doubt 2mm would work in any cradle really as that amount of spare room would leave a normal iphone (without the silicone skin) rocking around too much to be secure.

It's not so much a problem with the top securing clip but the two brackets on the bottom of the RAM mount which hold the bottom of the phone in place.

OK, so I didn't like the carbon idea, so I found this - http://www.more-thing.com/ultra-slim-silicone-case... - apparently about 1/2mm think so may just do OK.

That would be quite useful for winter training on the Turbo Trainer too. I like getting lost when on the roads, I think you learn your way round better...

If you are adding tech to the bike, I think the B&M e-werk kit looks interesting
