I have the first three installed on my HTC but can't decide which one is best.

What do you guys use/prefer?

I really like the interface on the phone that SportyPal uses, but I also like the ability to add geotagged photo's the Everytrail

Is there a MapMyRide app too? I've not used any of them but a friend recommends MapMyRun and there's definitely a MapMyRide website.

I use Motion X or iTrail both on an iPhone 3GS.

All GPS apps are very battery hungry and you will struggle to get more than 2 hours out of them on a fully charged iPhone. I have a battery extender which is fine for Golfshot (I have a holder on my trolley) but would fall out in seconds on the bike.

Has anyone seen a lead that is male one end and female the the other so the battery extender could stay in a pocket?

I have SportyPal on my Desire, battery lasts approx 4hrs, after each trip you can up load to the website.

Option #5: buying a proper GPS and not risking strapping an expensive smartphone to the bars.

I ordered a 'dock extender' cable this week. From using the iPhone running a GPS cycle app and using the external battery, this will let me put the external battery in a pocket and get 6-8 hours of app use without needing to use sleep mode. Just plugging the battery in would be asking for a vibration wrecked phone.

The cable was £17 on Amazon.

Defo Motion X. It's more battery hungry but at least it will record your track. Tracks gave up every time I went near trees, or anything that reduced GPS reception.

I've got the paid version but X lite does all you need unless you are a track geek.

I used Endomondo today on my Desire, 3 and half hours used about half of the battery, maybe a bit less. Just checked the website for the first time, lots of useful info, the data upload was completely reliable, so it gets my vote!

It lives in the backpack, not on the bars.

Mine lives on the bars on my MTB. I use the map function when following new trails. Its stood up to some serious stuff so far. I use the iPhone RAM mount and its pretty damn good. Very secure and sprung loaded. Together with air bouncers front and back, all seems fine.

I'd love the colour Garmin.

A mate has just mailed this to me...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Edge-705-GPS-enable...

That's £100 off the price of it everywhere else. Very tempted now.

Sport tracker is being pulled, or at least the web stuff is. They've spun out the company.

If you want deeper analysis of a GPX file, I'd go with sporttracks

http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/

Can do some dead clever stuff.

I use mytacks on my android phone, its quite useful to see the statistics generated. Had a ride the other day and it impressed my friends who use dedicated gps devices.

+1 MyTracks - Does everything you need, is free, and lets you record your runs down to Google Docs/Maps.

Plus it'll quite happily run on my Desire in my pocket...GPS and all.

I use gpscyclecomputer for my windows mobile. Its good but sometimes im out for too long and the battery is fooked so no track. When i'm home and plotting my routes i use a website called http://ridewithgps.com though which I reckon is pretty good. Allow you to put in all your gear and it will tell you how much you've used it.

I just installed My Tracks last week and finally got around to trying it for a ride home from work yesterday. Very impressive - worked perfectly with no gaps or breaks in the recording. Well worth trying, especially given that it's free!
