An old pic, but I was out in it again this time round - Those little twigs sting when your legs are cold...

I've been biking on a regular basis both to work and for general fun and I've just fitted some studded tyres and have absolutely no issues with both snow or black ice what so ever. So maybe getting the correct gear is the answer??

Anyhow took a quick piccy today on a blatter around the Solway coast where the sea has started to freeze into something that looks like the arctic! Crap phone piccy but you can see the ice....just..

is that by Bowness-on-Solway? How are the studded tires on clean tarmac, or have you not found any yet?!
Yeah sure is (well a couple of miles down the road) Tyres are fine on tarmac just "buzz" a little, the studs are designed to sink into the rubber so your not skidding off the road. When you first fit them you need to do 30 miles on tarmac to seat them correctly. You just fit them and leave them on for winter months take them off when the ice and frosts stop...

Best thing is the strange looks you get from people who obviously think you on normal tyres and risking your neck for the sake of a bike ride..
what tyres did you get/where from and cost? Sounds intriguing! I need to do 45 miles to hit 4000 for the year, so I might need them!

Got these... http://www.schwalbe.co.uk/c2-1217-schwalbe-tires-m... Got them from a LBS on special offer @£34 each they've sold out amazingly!

I've been running them at the max psi and haven't had the need to lower pressures to get more grip as of yet. I've been on sheet ice on purpose just to have a go with no issues. Like I say on ice free tarmac you just get a "buzz" road noise. I must admit I only commute and cycle for exercise/lose weight and I don't got blatting through forests etc. But on roads etc they've been possibly the best purchase I've made for a bike to date. My mates have tucked there bikes up for winter but I now really look forward to spinning about on empty snow covered back roads just for shear pleasure it's very relaxing!

.Adam. is that "selective colouring" or just a really bright bike on a really grey day...can't work it out!
Just some selective colouring, it is B&W apart from the bike.

My commuter (700x23C tyres).

When I got home it was -8C and the snow was 8" deep. Riding was fine so long as you stuck to where the car tyres had cleared and compacted it. Hard to see that narrow strip on busy unlit country roads though.

Drafting a lorry on the ring road was slightly stupid, for which I was punished by a face-full of snow from its roof.

Just spotted this thread. I have a few picutires from my ride last week in the snow I shall put up. A few things I noticed though.

- drivers hate being overtaken by cyclists in the snow

- overtaking sledges is hilarious

- you get a lot of "are you fking mental?" looks

- there is more grip in very cold snow than on wet mud, unless you are cycling along an incline where the snow has no structural rigidity and just gives way.

- there are a lot of runners in shorts and tshirts! I mean seriously, you look at me as if im a complete nutter, you're out running, destroying your knees and red from cold, at least I'm in all the right gear and nice and toasty!

Pictures will be up soon! I'm not at a pc at the mo, only on my iPod.

Living in the Alps for the winter means plenty of time for snow riding.
