Having been a regular at the Pod since it opened in 1966, I've heard quite a few announcements over the PA which have stuck in my memory as being extremely funny or surprising in some way.

The funniest announcement I ever heard at the Pod was in the early 1980's when the Pod didn't have flush toilets but had thunderboxes, ie just a hole in the ground basically. It was a summer time meeting when the toilets were really humming. The commentator, probably John Price, got everybody's attention when he said "We're looking for a knight in shining white armour to help a lady in distress". He then went on to say that a woman had dropped her handbag down the toilets and would somebody be brave enough to rescue it! Somebody must have been really brave because Pricey came on 10 minutes later and thanked the man concerned.

Those bogs didnt just HUM, they knew all the BLOODY WORDS !!!

God, I had forgotten what a godforsaken hole the pod *used* to be.

I remember the LUXURY of paying 5p for a proper sit down crapper !!!

Another one that springs to mind and made me laugh was in 1982 at the height of the Falklands War. The RAF had got the upper hand and were shooting down most of the Argentinian planes. At a Pod meeting at this time, a little old biplane flew sloooooowly over the strip, and Pricey said, "There goes the remnants of the Argentinian airforce."

A long time ago, back in the Days when Richard Nicholls was commentating, me and my Bro were sitting in the "stands" (5 tiers of angle iron and planks), we were sat just behind the xmas tree.

It had started to rain, and people were running for shelter, and I think it was RN that made a sarcy comment about it raining, and he asked how hard it was raining whilst looking out the tower in our direction...hearing the pleasure of our discomfort in his voice, my bro raised his middle finger.......RN then relayed to the everyone that it was only raining to the score of 1 !!!

I don’t want to bring any bad omens for this weekend, but have you ever noticed that when the wet stuff falls, we always get the PA Announcement that says “We’ve got to halt racing, as it’s raining at the Top End”

It’s funny how it always starts to rain at the Top End and never at the Start Line isn’t it? rolleyes

I take no credit for this, as it was pointed out to me by Phil from DWF

I'm afraid there is a perfectly scientific explanation for this: The prevailing wind in the UK is from the south west, and Santa Pod track lies on a NE->SW orientation with the top end at the south western extremity. This means rain will generally blow in from the top end.

And the track is oriented this way because aeroplanes take off into the prevailing wind.

That's why it always starts raining at Shakey at the startline first because, as with most runways, it's also in a SW/NE direction, but they run in the other direction to the Pod.

This is getting a bit Anoraky isn't it!

It is interesting how both tracks were originally 3 runway airfileds and both ended up using the NE-SW runway was the strip. At shakey the pits are one of the other runways, the third being (I think) still in use, and there was a great thread on DW about the pod's history as an airfield.

We Drag Racers have a lot to thank a certain Mr Hitler for... In fact most race tracks are old airfields, so all motor sport fans should thank him...
