Skyline R33 GTR breaks Jap Record

agreed low 7s would be on the cards on slicks even at 3000+lbs weight, heard figrues of 2000bhp from Splinter's motor? Andy Frost's new turbo setup can't be far away from that?
it's not...but in the other direction.....lol Unless the "jap" scene can run even 8's on pump gas they won't be seen in the same county as S/E..who'd want to be top dog one minute, and first round fodder the next?
the thing is those small cubic inch jap motors haven't got a hope of making a 1000hp on pump fuel....
If many of the drag racing "purists" on here would only bother to go to some of the "lifestyle" events at the Pod and Shakey, events like the Ultimate Street Car, Hot Rod Drags, Nostalgia Nationals, Redline Rumble, Mopar Nationals etc, then they would see literally dozens and dozens of cars which are built purely for the quarter mile, but which never appear at pure drag race meetings.
I would hazard a guess and say the reasons for this are numerous such as preferring being a big fish in a little pond, can't be bothered to get a competition licence and the hassle of pre-entering, prefer turning up on the day and paying at the sign-on office, don't like eliminations just rwyb, etc, etc.
I don't think that you are ever going to persuade these people that a "proper" drag race meeting is the way to go.

it's horses for courses in the end
if they don't like main stream drag racing and don't want to enter/compete then thats fine
like you won't see me at jap days etc becuase it's not my 'scene' I'm a drag racer/hot rodder through and through so I go to national/european rounds and stuff like American Car World Nats, Nostalgia Nats and Hot Rod Drags

Furyous suggested another Gary's Doorslammer meet.
I'll second that.
Only chance you'll have of getting everyone together.
With plenty of promotion and a nice fat pot for the winner..
This fella in the US has run 7's on street tyres though his profile page does not mention this fact. BF Goodrich are using this fact in their current Hot Rod mag ad. 7.9 @ 178mph.

Has anyone here cracked the 7's on street tyres yet?

I think the quick Jap cars would be better suited to the UK Street Racer series right now.
They'd be quick enough to challenge for the title if they were on road tyres and pump gas.
Street Eliminator is another league up really, and requires a big financial and time commitment to attend 2 day events all year.

loads of those running 7's
The Madza's running 7's over there are in no way, shape or form road legal. The Hurricane Motorsports team I saw over there were probably the closest and ran mid 8's with slicks. Rotary engines do seem to go pretty quick...with a full Moly chassis and a carbon body.

Mickey Thompson, BFG Drag Radials and Nitto 555R Drag Radials are the tyres of choice these days.

Watch out for them rotaries, the Dragon RX7 ran 9.3 (no launch control, no 4 wheel drive and a standard H pattern gearbox with stock RX7 diff and an MOT) at pod last weekend on street legal drag radials.... and as for the 150k budget many are spending on building or importing these jap beasts the RX7 has been done for around the 30K mark.
Going for 8's next season or hopefully at Shakespear in a week or two as the last shot at it this season.
Cheers
Guy.
Hi Guy,
I am not doubting the potential of the Rotary lump.
The cars I saw in Australia and New Zealand were some serious pieces of kit and had some serious power. If i am right though isn't it hard to measure HP with the rotary lump?
Also who remembers the RX7 at the Pod years back that was very LOUD. So loud infact I am sure Knut asked him to turn it off as he couldn't hear the FC warming up!
Dan.
Dan,
Yes it does seem hard to dyno the rotary, the Dragon Team are unsure of how powerful their engine is, it wheel spins on the dino at just under 700bhp and its not even on full boost at that point! with another 3-4k of revs to go.
Australia do lead the way with rotaries and currently hold all the records, we are trying to go for as many stock records as possible, we already have the european 1/4 mile record.
Even though Tims Skyline did a very impressive 8.8 and the first jap car to do so in the UK, the race is still on for a UK built and developed car rather then an imported one to get into the 8's.
Cheers

What about motion lotion- fuel straight of a Shell/BP forecourt?
Any thing else?
Pump gas is a definate - the cars go on a cruise and have to be seen to take on a specific amount of pump gas and perform a hot start with no artificial cooling. If I get time I'll try to distill the interesting rules from the rulebook

Very interesting on the Dyno front. What does the RX7 weigh?
I think the main noise in Australia rotary wise iS Dyson Rotary isn't it? I seem to remember an awful lot of cars with there silver logo with the triangle like logo? They seem to like there old Mazdas almost as much as the new ones! Isn't somebody building an RX8 rotary car in the States to challenge the record?
Heres them crazy Ozzies!
