A shocking end to preceedings at yesterdays Flame and Thunder show at the Pod when Fireforce 1 was engulfed in flames shortly after leaving the line. Thankfully Tony Baker was unhurt, but it certainly looked a bad one.

The car didn't seem right as it left the line and after a few yards the chutes were out and then the car fireballed, finally stopping in the opposite lane at about half track. As always the safety crew were straight on it. Not much left of the car through.

Just read that on Eurodragster - shocking indeed. Glad Tony Baker is ok. Not really been a good year for iconic jet cars has it!

In nearly 30 years, scariest incident I have seen. Tony was in the car for so long. Glad he is A-Ok, and the safety kit, as ever, did its job...

Glad Tony is ok. It was certainly a scary ride. We could tell something was not right, the parachute came out instantly. Oh and as ever...the videos on you tube have popped up already.rolleyes

I took a friend for the first time. She did not know what to think!

nah the traffic is always like that at flame & thunder, shear weight of traffic and people trying to leave at the same time (15,000 - 20,000 people apparently there although some would of been staying over night)

I have just posted 2 pages of Flame & Thunder photos here...

www.dragsterworld.com/2006reports/flame_and_thunder/index.php

Was in the car on the way home when Venners suddenly went very silent on NitroFM... was very good to hear him confirm Tony was ok after several minutes silence.

A pretty scary moment, for sure, and a sad end for Fireforce 1. Otherwise another great day at the Pod, and looking forward to the serious action coming back in 2007.

Hi jetheads !
Yeah, really sad to see FF 1 around no more,
it was the first JFC I ever expierienced , Hockenheim in the 80s, I guess.
And Martin shattered a window of the timing box in Hockenheim
in the startline area of the quartermile some years ago.....yikes..with it.
Best news is that Tony is OK.....clap
We had a nearly fatal incident with a JFC in germany 9 years ago,
when the main fuel line broke inside the car,
and soaked the driver in kerosene, wich was then lit by the afterburner.
But the driver Sammy made it, although badly burnt,
and is still running a small dragstrip near Berlin , the MZA Luckau.
@dragsterworld: Who is running the "Lucky Devil" SP/ET Corvette,
and is that another PM in the making ?

When the fireball rolled to a stop in front of me it was a heart stopping moment. Great to see a rather sooty figure pop out after what seemed like an age. Posted some good shots here www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=323661&f=109&h=0 but the rest of the photography forum seem more interested in taking closeups of boring crap.

Wayne Nicholson is in the drivers seat of "Lucky Devil"; whether he'll stand for Prime Minister when Tony steps down is anyones guess laugh

Sad to say this happens all over the baord in Motorsports not just Drag Racing. Bad crash in Formula Ford? Watch the fans flock at the next event to try see it live.

Its common knowledge that people enjoy watching crashes and incidents. Its part of life.

Look at youtube for example and enter Motorsport Crashes and see where you end up.

My only defense is that newbie to the track may of thought it was a stunt to top all the other fire acts beforehand and may not of realised how serious it was until it was announced on the PA.

On the other hand people were jeering on the bank which is sad.

When i stood on the bank and saw it unfold all the people around me were upset more than cheering.

yeah it is right how many people on here look at a crash on a motorway? it just annoys me that im sure some of them only go to see things like that, think what made it worse is that my little sister heard all that cheering but as we were due to run she thought it was my dad.

I have to say i am glad i was on the startline when it all happened cos the people there were in genuine shock rather than cheering.

Nobody was cheering it to go up even further. I cant believe people think thats what they heard!

I was on the bank...we saw him get out and we cheered him getting out. I really think it was just relief he was out. I clapped. I didn't cheer. My friend (who is a first timer) was stunned. She just looked at me in disbelief.

Sorry to disagree but i was there on the bank. On the vid its exactly as i remember it.
