There were 2 models of engine - the F20C and the F22C1. The F20C was used in both AP1 & AP2 versions of the S2000. In certain markets, notably the USA and later in Japan, the F22C1 was fitted to more recent AP2 versions.
I don't know enough about the visual differences between the two, but would assume that an engine number, stamped onto a plate somewhere on the engine would confirm which version you have.
www.s2ki.com is the place to get a definitive answer.

Not strictly true, and a common misnomer.

The terms 'AP1' and 'AP2' are commonly (but mistakenly) used to refer to the facelift of the S2000 circa 2004.

In actual fact, the term directly relates to the engine fitted. An AP1 is fitted with the 2.0L F20C, whilst an AP2 is fitted with the 2.2L F22C1. AP1 and AP2 actually feature in the VIN number of an S2000, and are entirely dependent on the engine fitted.

Regarding telling the difference between the F20C and the F22C1 - as dobly says, the engine number is the only real well to tell, but a simple check can be the colour of the plug cover. This is black on the F20C, but gold on the F22C1. However, they are interchangeable, so not a definitive indicator.

If the kit car's been built in the UK then it'll almost certainly be an F20C - no-one imports USDM cars over here unless it's unique to USA (e.g. Mustangs, Camaros...).

JDM AP2? Possible...a Jap import from 2006MY onwards would have an F22C...but someone (a) would've needed to import the car; and (b) then write-off the car with the engine being donated into the kit car.

Long odds...but as above, get the engine # and check that out - local Honda dealer can probably help.
