I can't speak of the s2k suspension thing...but having rusty arches sorted isn't crazy money, I've had it done on a couple jap cars...if you can find dc5 donor rear wings you're talking £800 both sides, maybe a grand if you take it somewhere pricey....nothing major on a £9k car...if it ever did need doing.

Generally they are solid cars, and there are plenty of good examples around of both, I would say you are pretty much spoilt for choice at the £9k budget level.

Good advice. I think my ideal checklist is:

1. Rust free.
2. Has had geometry done relatively recently so I know the bolts are not seized.
3. Has had the timing chain tensioner replaced.
4. FSH. I would rather an 80k example that has had the big 75k service than a 70k example that hasn't.
5. A seller that seems to have kept on top of maintenance (decent tyres, knows when he last changed the oil etc.).
6. No tears in roof.
7. Preferably evidence the clutch has been replaced.

Seized brake calipers is another common S2000 issue, pretty expensive to sort too, so if it's had those done then it's definitely a bonus as it will likely need it at some stage.

I would always favour a facelift model - less twitchy on the limit due to 17"wheels (which definitely look better than the 16"s too), slightly softer springs at the rear too to reduce rear end bias and easier to corner without mishap (but still not foolproof of course).
Updated lights and interior etc, make the facelift a more modern look - and they will hold their money better too.

If a car has never had the suspension bolts adjusted then I think you'll be lucky if they are all free, but I think £2K is absolutely the worst possible scenario, and in all likelihood would be much less even if all four were seized (maybe £1k from what I've read, and agin that's all four).

Underseal is definitely something that you need to look at ASAP if it hasn't' had it before, especially if you are intending to use it all year round.

The wheels and brakes on the gold one look pretty poor, wheel refurb ata minimum, and check the calipers too as mentioned. But as I say I would look more towards a facelift if you can

Yup I noticed that, and I think that one is a little expensive. How would one check the calipers? Certainly an underseal is on the cards for the Scottish winter - would £200 cover it?

I agree an 04-05 would be preferable but there isn't too many in budget. Perhaps I should look for a little higher mileage 04.

EDIT: Here is one relatively nearby - S2000. I think it is overpriced though.

I just had a quote from rustmaster in Hertfordshire for £390 for a full underseal strip and waxoyl retreatment including cavities...so I would imagine you would be able to get something comparable done up in scotland for £200-300. Pretty much essential if you plan on keeping the car more than a year or two and driving in winter.
