Nice roadster. I suspect a good number of potential buyers simply didn't want a car that needs to given so many rpm to get it moving up the road.

The said roadster first made appearance in 1999 and ended production in 2009 so let's put that into context first.

If the so called torque issue made it such a flop then why are Journos and other people still talking about it in 2021?

I purchased mine in 2015 and it has more than doubled in value since. It's funny cause I would have expected it to cost peanuts now cause nobody wanted one.

I'm glad i was one potential buyer that was willing to give it........"so many rpm to get it moving down the road" and the induction and exhaust noise is one to behold when giving it some! driving

But “gutless”? Gutless is what I’d use to describe say a transit van with 90bhp when it’s at full power. We’re talking about a 1200kg car with about 160bhp at 5000rpm… That’s not gutless.
The lack of torque makes it feel that way, but it's generally going quicker than you expect if you look at the speedo...this has been accentuated by all the FI engines people are now used to, that includes oil burners.
I've always felt that to be an unfair comment.. Imo it doesn't lack torque for a 2.0 engine.. If it made 180bhp (like other 2.0 Nas) , rather than 230+bhp, it would be about right..

It punches above its weight, so is always judged to a higher standard.. Pros and cons.
I'm not knocking it, I love driving mine and will be staying NA...I'm just giving my opinion of why people mention/notice it.

I think you are right; if it had 180/200ft/lbs it would be more inline with the 240bhp headline figure...but then that isn't what Vtec-Yo is all about smile

We had a play with one on the dyno when they were new-ish.

From the shape of the torque curve, it looked like the VTEC came in at slightly higher revs than would have been ideal - which emphasised the VTEC 'kick'.

vtec comes in at 6k on standard ECU. I've seen people get them down to 4-5k etc.

I personally have no problems with it moving up the road lol. Gets up and goes, it's so quick reving that the 6k comes in no time.

I've taken on 350z etc and easily kept up and even gained on them.

yet no one talks abut 350z etc being slow or low torque.

Hondas are unique the way they drive and deliver their power and s2k is no different, you gotta like the way it drives/delivers power to enjoy it.

clearly it is doing really well, people talk about it in 2021 and prices are going up each month. US for e.g. is stupid.. seen some 100k+

I think it is a good time to buy one, judging by Auto trader over 55 cars for sale at the moment, probably the highest I have seen in the last few years.
