Honda reveals NSX future concept

V10 powered, low, wide and aggressive

Honda's Acura ‘Advanced Sports Car Concept’ has made its world debut at Detroit's auto show.

The concept provides a preview of the design direction for the successor to the Acura NSX and incorporates a powerful front-mounted, V10 engine driving through the rear wheels.

The exterior of the concept demonstrates a fusion of advanced technology and emotion. The long, pronounced hood features deeply sculpted lines and embossed air vents, both of which hint at the powerful engine beneath. The exterior lines run the length of the body, creating a ribbon-like effect from the front headlights to the rear wheel arches, evoking a feeling of movement and power.

Modern in appearance, the concept retains the cues associated with its predecessor, the NSX. The concept’s slim, LED headlights are pushed wide and designed to mimic the pop-up headlights found on the first generation NSX. Other styling hints include a modern take on wraparound rear taillights and the all black cockpit.

Wide, and low to the ground with a 2,764mm wheelbase, the concept is anchored by grippy 19-inch front and 20-inch rear performance tyres wrapped around custom billet-machined, polished aluminium wheels. Ventilated carbon ceramic brake discs and eight-piston callipers accent the wheels. Bold wheel arches and flares add to the concept’s aggressive appearance.

The low-slung cabin is constructed entirely of tinted glass and sits flush against the body. Door handles are also flush mounted, allowing the sports car to retain a clean and aerodynamic appearance. The car features a carbon fibre underbody and the rear is finished with quad exhaust pipes and integrated rear diffusers.

The concept was designed by the Acura’s Los Angeles-based design team that will be based at the new Acura Design Centre, opening this summer.

“The Acura brand will always be a home for people who love to drive,” said Honda UK's boss Takeo Fukui. “As we advance toward building a car like this, I can tell you it will feature advanced technology matching our passion for performance.”

“Our intention was to design an exotic sports car that gracefully combines advanced technology and strong emotion,” said principal designer Jon Ikeda. “The technical, machined surfaces and keen-edge design are balanced with sweeping curves and dramatic lines, all of which results in the ultimate exotic sports car.”

No decision has yet been made about production of the Advanced Sports Car Concept.

Hmm. Thought the HSC was more striking - however, I for one hope they will put something into production!

I think yes, also more Honda. This smacks of being how the Toyota should have looked. Very pretty, though.

I can see the S2000 in its profile. I quite like it, but not a lot.

How can the successor to a V6 transverse mid-engined NSX have a front-mounted longitudinal V10?
Sounds like some desperate clutching at straws from the marketing dep't!

Not good, in my opinion.

Previous NSX still looks great.

I cannot see any 'family' traits in this effort.

It's got the Acura (sp?) badge, so I think it's meant to be aimed at the US.

I'm not sure why the rear window is so small given the engine is now in the front, and I agree it can't really be the new NSX with the engine in the front, though being a V10 rather than a V6 I don't have an issue with.

Not sure about it really, I think I'd rather have a new Esprit

Agreed 100%.

The next NSX should be mid engined.

That looks to be targeting the TT/350z segment, not the Audi r8 / Porsche. That's not what the NSX was ever about.

Not initially taken with it. The NSX was such a revelation when it came along, and it was engineered so well that it lasted. Maybe the NSX will not be bettered, but surely Honda will loose face if their NSX repacement falls short of NSX levels. It should be their technical showpiece, and perhaps it will be, but from the styling point it doesn't grab me. maybe a different colour will do it justice.

Long bonnet will enable midengined layout btw. Think S2000.

Exactly. And an FR layout allows for more practicality...which MAY be something to do with the high bootline.

Besides...why SHOULD Honda do NSX Mk2. Why not do something completely different (like this)!

I think it look great.

I would love to have one of thoses. Lets hope it doesnt get too diluted from now to the production of the NSX replacement.

Stunning, especially the front end...Back doesn't live up to the front, but it's much better than the back of the previous one IMHO.

Please make it!!

It would have been better if they kept it mid-engined, as that was one of the more unique features of the NSX.

I wanted a better look, so here are some stand pics : www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-acura-concept-stops-the-show-but-not-the-imag/

I'm getting warmer, some nice details there.

not keen

the big question is not how it looks, but how much power it has !

the nsx handles better than most supercars, but lacks power to really compete !

Imagine an NSX with that superb handling, pure driving experience and power to keep up with a 430 / Gallardo / GT3 (so 0-60 in 4-4.5, top speed approaching 200mph) then you'd have a car ....

Or if you could up the naturally aspirated power and add turbos ... get something performing like a Noble.....

The fact is, wonderful though the NSX is, it is designed to go up against the 348.

This new car, if it is to be a succesor needs to give supercars a run for their money, much like some of the stuff that Mercedes/AMG/Brabus pump out....

I don't like it, I know it's a concept but it's much too 'conceptualised', it has no identity. The HSC looked like a Honda and was a progression of the NSX, this looks like the sort of trash the US car companies display year on year (and never build).

As a current NSX owner I can't say I'll be "upgrading" to this. Without wishing to sound too prejudiced, it looks like it was styled in America. Which it was.
