They'd have been better calling this the S and not bothering with an R unless they were going to do it properly... imho M3 CSL style with an S2000 engine!

Just my 2p

Dave

Will never happen the S2000 engine is on a completely different angle - hence the length of the bonnet and transmission tunnel!

Surely they could run the same spec quite easily!?!?

There's a guy down the road from me who's had one for about a month(must be an import).

Looks nice, no aggression in the styling at all, looks grown up if that's the right phrase.

There made in swindown then sent back to japan! So no imports avaliable.

F20C is a completely different animal to the K20. Higher spec components, completely different head (running old-school VTEC not iVTEC anyway), higher compression etc. etc. Different dimensions too. So virtually nothing from the F20C would transplant across...it'd be easier to create/adapt a transverse 'box to fit it than try that. But even that would be a pain, as the F20C isn't exactly a compact 4-pot, and it'd be a right squeeze in a Civic 'bay.

There'd be nothing to stop Honda making a K24A, or a K20B, but the first would require significant investment as it would be 'from scratch', while the second would need higher-spec components and advanced engineering to achieve significant gains...the '220PS' quoted for the DC5 ITR is on Jap-spec 100RON fuel, think they're more like 210 or so in the UK on 97RON.

I think THAT is why they've stuck with a remapped K20A...every other top-end hot-hatch now has FI for the power or a big heavy V6/I6, and the 'Type R' philosophy (such that they've stuck to it for the third generation...i.e. not a fat lot!) wouldn't wash with either of those, and the market wouldn't support Honda charging £20k for a 220+bhp more-focused CTR with a heavily-redesigned or brand-new engine.

At the end of the day this third-gen CTR is a product of the market and marketing, not the Honda Engineering Dep't (as were the original ITR, ATR, and S2000) showing what they could do. Calling it a 'Type R' is pushing it as much as the MkIV Golf claiming to have the same DNA as the MkI and II.

Yep.

But then my only real gripe is that they have used a badge like Type R on what is really just a Type S in my view.

It'd be like Ford having put the Cosworth badge on the back of the new Focus ST!

Its taking a bit of a slating on the type r forums, not many have anything good to say about, they agree it will be a good seller but its not really a type r with dual zone aircon, curtain airbags etc. everybody was expecting much more, I will make my mind up after a test drive but I can't see it being better than my facelift DC5 integra type r

Living in swindon seen a couple of these around and i work for the Merc dealership had to go collect a Honda employees car yesterday and there were at least 4 of these in the employee car park all in red though. think they look quite good to be honest. got a few mates that work there and have a diesel one that im pretty impressed with probably a better choice than this type r but not been in one yet so no comment.

Them BIG wheels had better be very very light otherwise it's just more weight and inertia added onto an engine that is increasingly looking gutless vs what it's asked to work against!

Who knows they still could make a stripped out TypeRR version , but still 200bhp in a hatchback is still quite a lot. The original Type R wasn't best because it had the most power, it was the best hot hatch.

It's a very good car, in terms of practicality, reliability, running costs.

But for those of us familiar with the purity of low-slung, all-double wishbone chassis of the EK4/EK9/DC2 as well as their light weight & compactness, it's a case of baby & bathwater with the FK.

Am I the only one who is reminded of Wallace & Gromit's A30 van whenever I see a 1-series?

That's why BMW bought Rover!

But you do realise that the options you list in your post are just that... options. The Type-R doesnt even come with Aircon as standard and to get the options you list you must specify the "GT" pack.

Totally agree with you about the test drive though, there are so many people stating its rubbish yet nobody has driven it yet and there is a media hold until 1st Feb on those who have.

ps. DC5'teg cloud9 Nice one.

If they do a JDM spec one with LSD and all the fruit it might be a laugh but like turbo up there I am sticking with my DC5.

Why don't they just sell us the JDM one in fact, save them the cost of shipping them off to Japan for people to just import them back!

Because more people will buy a cheaper 'sanitised' Type-R with all the trimmings (yet still with the badge because they have to have the right badge!!! rolleyes ) than would buy a lighter, louder, more focused car which costs £2-4k more!

Zactly, turned into a badge engineered turd, with good engineering from the engineers, but sprinkled with pointless crap and terrible styling from the "marketing" boys...

Honda seem to have put their Type R brand down the dilution toilet. Lets hope in the future they decide to fish it out and use it properly again!

I don't know why but this is the first thing that has EVER, EVER made me like Honda less.

The FWD Sh:tboxes the troll out, I can forgive,
The BAR Fuel tank barely raised a shrug,
The Loss and current non-replacement of the NSX made me mis' for a good few months,
But this? This is an utter piss take and a slap in the face.

S2000, off of the list.

I'll get a 350z to tide me over until the next Supra's a year or two old.
