Hi all,

Thinking of getting a pre-new shape Civic Type R over the tamer 1.6 Sport. What should I be looking out for and what experiences have you guys had with running costs? I have had a quote from Elephant for £750 - 23, 4NCB, Luton, on-street parking - thought that was quite good.

Things I am most interested in are:

- Petrol consumption (and type of petrol used)
- Servicing costs

I had an 04 ctr from new.

With mixed driving about 29mpg on average

1st service with me supplying the oil at main dealer £97

2nd service which was a low mileage one again with me supplying oiil £99 main dealer

2 new toyo tyres in 2yrs 8 mths about £160 (about 16 k miles)

New set of front pads about £30 (about 17k miles)

very reasonable i would say

Thanks for the stats - very reasonable, and I guess dictated a lot by how you drive the thing! I do quite a few motorway miles so would hope to the the MPG up to mid-30s but looks like tyres and insurance is the biggest hit.

I have not had a test drive yet (tested the Sport) - have heard lots of 'lack-of-torque' comments and that it can be quite tiresome to get the performance out of it?

Yeah you have got to rev it for best performance, But thats the fun of it. I never once found it tiresome. I always found it fine when tootling around too!

I've had a CTR for coming up 4 years now, done just over 50k miles.

29mpg is what I get on average with mixed driving, in on-road driving I've seen as much as 330 miles out of a tank (steady schlepp up the motorway to Scotland) and as little as 180 (driving around Scotland... evil) Fuel consumption depends on how you drive it - plenty of VTEC gets through the fuel quite quickly.

I get through a pair of front tyres every 10k or so (~£180 a pair), then put the new ones on the back and swap the older ones to the front to keep them all fairly fresh. Front pads last about 25k (~£40 from Honda), still on the original discs, rear pads are about half worn. Servicing was about £150 at 12.5k, £250 at 25k, £180 at 37.5k and £300 at 50k. Usual consumables apart from that, oil and wiper blades, a windscreen etc.

I've driven it fairly hard mainly on country roads all it's life, I've had a few niggly issues with mine, mainly interior trim, few mechanical bits and bobs too, but it's never left me stranded anywhere... yet!!

Value for money wise I say they're superb cars for the performance/reliability you get!!

Thanks for the tips guys! Do you put Optimax in or is it happy with 95?

From what I remember reading CTRs are mapped for 95 and doesn't take advantage of the higher octane. Some people swear by running them on Optimax or whatever else but I've never bothered, just always used branded fuel, mainly Shell or Esso unleaded, and avoid supermarket juice.

Get between 250-300 a tank depending on my driving style. I just use regular unleaded although I know many swear by higher octane and say it helps fuel consumption.

1st service was £97, just due a second service soon.

My front tyres lasted 12,500 miles and I managed to get new Bridgestones for £90 each. The rears still had loads of tread, infact still got them on now at 22,000 miles (think they may need changing soon!)

Probably because of the nature of the drivetrain economy and consumption will vary wildly depending on driving style. I've had as little as 19mpg and as much as 32mpg out of mine and I rarely hang about... So far topped oil up once (1 litre) in just over 8,000 miles and 8 months.

Can eat tyres, esp. at junctions & roundabouts if you're pulling away sharpish.

You should also factor in a few quid for PH stickers too...

Bought my facelift CTR new February 04, and it's done 19,000 miles to date.
Had no problems at all (touch wood).

I replaced the front Bridgestone tyres at 10K, rear are still OK. Fitted a pair of Michelin Pilot PE2 Exalto tyres to the front. These have now done 9K and are only ½ worn...much better than the Bridgestone in the wet/dry and no tramlining.

MPG varies from 25-33 depending on distance travelled, oil consumption is negligible and front pads are only ½ worn.

Just had it's 3-year service and Dealer replaced all the wiper blades.

To keep the service charges lower I buy the pollen/dust filters for the A/C from Halford's at £17 for the pair and fit them myself....dealer would charge £50 !!

I replaced the headlight dipped bulbs with Osram Silver Star, these made a big improvement as the original bulbs were naff.

Just wondering if the CTR has a cambelt that needs to be changed.. or is it chan driven.? Also what brand/type of oil and male/type of plugs do they require when being serviced.?

IIRC when I topped the oil in mine up I was advised by a dealer to use Castrol Edge 0W-30.

Very cheap car to run tbh for what it is

just had my 24k service which came to £450 but that was front pads, 24k service, new rear light (£85 fitted) and wiper blades

im getting 15k from front tyres and about 40k from rears

im using VMAX fuel and theres definatly alot more low down torque on it and its smouther on cam its very noticably better

its been pretty faultless for the 2 years ive owned it my only complaints really are wheel spin on anything other than bone dry roads, the steerings abit inert and the brakes there totally horrible, worst brakes on any sports car i have driven in recent years if i was keeping it id definatly replace the fronts.

comuting to london im getting 25mpg and on motorway cruising 35mpg and im pretty right foot heavy

handling and turn in is even now stunning for a FWD car

a) chain-cam. b) 10W40 - semi-synthetic - main-dealer uses Shell Helix. c) spark-plugs (platinum-tipped) - heck, i think i will have a new car by time they need to be changed!
