Hi people,

I have found a tidy looking ATR local to me, went for a drive and found that the gearbox is duff(vtec 3rd to 5th major crunching etc) The cars paint and interior is in good condition but it will need 4 new tyres a major service and the gearbox done.

Was really needing some guidance with the total cost of this lot.... Was thinking £300 for tyres (Toyo TR1's) £300 for a major service and and £1000 for gearbox??
Does anyone know if this sort of prices are realistic and where is the best place to source a post 2001 gearbox?

Thanks in advance

Not specifically ATR, but I have replaced a gearbox on the Saab, and it was £250 for a second hand 'box, and about £400 to fit at a specialist, 18 months ago.
The replacement now has a knackered reverse synchro, and that would have been £2.5k at an approved independant. It is costing me about £800 at a specialist (different one, as I have moved) to strip the gearbox, and replace the reverse gear.

I would expect the ATR to be at least the same, although it depends what the problem is, if you decide to get it fixed, rather than replace it.

Also try the Accord Type R forum and have a search around. You might get a few answers: www.atr.org.uk

I guess the crunch is due to worn synchros, as they're also common on Integras. I would expect a gearbox specialist to charge about £500 parts and labour

That sounds about right. £1k should be plenty to get you a full 'box refurb - synchro, linkage, etc. IIRC there's also a diff in there, so might be worth getting that looked over while it's open.

You may as well go the whole hog and get a new clutch, check flywheel, and for total piece of mind cambelt and water pump if they haven't been done.

Once sorted it will be great.

Thanks for the info people, yeah tbh I would be looking at getting that done also. 1999, 92k, good condition with part service history and new box etc.....whats it worth?? 5 months tax and mot also.

Without the box being done I would think 3.5-4k. And with it done 4.5-5k.
