The above comments are aimed at the petrolted or what ever his name is.

Anyway if my car has no torque which equates to acceleration why will my car beat a porsche boxter to 100 mph (16.2 sec)?

IMO 0-100 accelleration times is not a good indication of torque, its in-gear times.

Would a CTR beat a Boxter from say 50mph to 100mph if both cars were in 6th gear(without changing down)?

Having read a bit more on this Civic Type-R I can't see that it is any way better than my 6 year-old Corrado VR6, which is currently worth about £8k.
See www.py22.dial.pipex.com/cars/corrado.html#Tech for perfomance figures.

So there's progress for you, eh?

No, but is that the point? If you drive like that, you may as well get an automatic.

NB - I can sit on both sides of this fence as I have a grunty TVR and a revvy hot hatch. There are arguments for both approaches towards extracting rapid performance.

Who cares, as long as we're all having fun?

If you read the rest of my post, you'll realise that you're not the only person blessed with a sense of irony.

Good to see you're on for this Sunday's Basingstoke shindig anyway.

I was merely pointing out the torque deficiency rather than driving style.

The CTR owner was quite happy to acknowledge a lack of low rev grunt, but was also pointing out that this does not stop his car being extremely rapid, when driven with a bit of effort, rather than wafting along in top gear.

I don't think any of us can argue with that.

I appear to be getting the arse with people this afternoon . Apologies to all. Normal service will be resumed tomorrow, which is, after all, a brand new day.

Hmmm great thread in which all opinions have been outed and the maths have been done.

Are there any psychologists in here to add to it?

Here is the final word!

The CTR is sexy looking (didn't like it first time?... look again)

It has a bit of road noise yes but look on the bright side you don't get that constant TVR V8 rumble interfering with the bass on your cd's.

It is fast....... damn fast!! and I don't belive that any new car this side of 25K could do better

Handling is superb if you have the guts to drive it.

as a footnote the author of this thread is obviously an idiot of titanic proportions with a small penis large car problem.

He's got a point though CarZee - I'd rather have a Civic over a TVR any day.
And it won't spoil your hairdo either, what with it's tin top.
Time to dust off the nom de plume, Ted ?

I've just got back from a business trip to New Zealand and am trying to catch up - great thread.

A couple of points;

The issue of "but it's only 16k new.. your TVR costs 40K". This is only valid if you're more impressed by a new reg plate than the car. Why not buy something second hand for 16K or less, or are you too snobish?

Apples and Bannanas - yeah right, so a TVR / Porsche is not the same as a hot hatch - thanks for straightening that out for me.

Ted, great review, keep it up.

The rest of you, carry on with the thread and drive what you want - just don't tell me that your 16k VTEC is more fun than my 12k TVR or that you diesel is faster than a Griffith.

Cheers

Oh yeah and in NZ all you see are jap saloons, Legacy estates, jap SUVs and Holdens (you can get a Holden Vectra).

Oh and large wallowy Ford taxis made in Australia. Didn't see one TVR.

JSG,

I think the arguement for a new Honda over a secondhand car is not down to snobbery, but probably more down to the 3 year warranty that's extendable to 6 years for only £295!! That has to count for something surely?
