Cheapest way is to find a normal insurer that will insure your car on the road AND track (though these are becoming harder and harder to find).
Otherwise someone like Competition Car Insurance (01159 415255) will insure your car at a day on a sliding scale dependant on the level of cover you require

Andy is right...(re the one for all policy). Tesco.com still cover non timed/non competative days - but remember if you bend your car on track, you'll affect your road insurance as well.
I use Competition Car Insurance every time... but it's kinda' pricey - so I usually take out about 5 or 6k's worth of cover - I mean If I had that much of a crash, it'd be ME I'd be worried about!

I have just been down the route of the big phone-around. Up to now, my presnt insurance covered unlimited trackdays, it has been organised by PerformanceMarque and is a Norwich Union policy. NU now decline to cover trackdays as part of the policy, but you can add UK days onto a new policy, but at 93:75 per day.
CCI/Edgar Lawson are utterly usless, they said that they would send me details of their cover and costs. Despite telling them my fax number (twice), my email address, my phone number. I'm still waiting a week later, I WONT be dealing with a company like that treats potential customers in this way. So, it comes down to Tesco's and Barclaycard.
Both will indeed cover trackdays as part of the policy. However, any modifcations to your car, either performance or cosmetic, add percentages to the basic cost. For me, Barclaycard comes out a much better deal, 187:00 cheaper than Tesco, includes items that Tesco's wont cover, e.g. Green Card, get you home, etc etc. And the excess is only 100:00 (500:00 for Tesco's). But, you cant buy either Tesco or Barclaycard on-line. Neither site allows the addition/inclusion of trackdays, you have to phone the companies to get trackdays written into the policy.

Take a crash helmet along with you. Walk round, talk to people, and ask if you can have a ride. If there's a spare seat, you'll get a ride. I've taken loads of people out like that before.
You'll get a good idea of what a track day is like by going to watch first. It'll mean that when you go along to drive on one, it won't be such a mystery, and you'll probably have a reasonable idea of what not to do

Richard, I see that you are based in Northhampton. I will be at Silverstone on Monday 12th Aug, evening event 17:30 to 20:30. 944 turbo if you want a ride. Event is 2 x groups, each group has 1 x 30 session and 3 x 20 min sessions, (potential 1.5 hours track time). Full GP circuit. The last eveing that I did, July, went to open pit lane as there wasn't enough attendees to run sessions. Passengers are 15:00, drivers 105:00, organised by GoldTrack. I have a spare helmet, arms and legs must be covered.
