Toe in/toe out

I want to settle a little dispute I'm having with somebody, and I know there are a fair few experienced racing drivers on here who may be able to confirm.

I've always thought that by toeing IN the front wheels gives you improved turn in response. Now I'm hearing that toeing OUT does the same! I don't understand how that can be the case. During turn in, the weight shifts to the outer wheels, hence if the outer front wheel (the one doing most of the work) is toeing in, it's going to improve turn in and that makes sense to me. If it's toe'd out, surely turn in will be more sluggish!

Definately Toe out improves turn in, but straightline is a lot worse. I play around with geometry most weeks on my Drift car & its amazing the difference it makes.


Try lots of toe out on the rear if you fancy a huge laugh (not on public roads unless your brave!!!)

Or unless you have good life insurance Had the tracking played with on the NSX a while back - they run huge toe in factory, had it backed off if for no other reason than to help the tyres last more than 4k miles. Now on 6k miles current tyres looking good, just a little more oversteery but quite progressive (well, as progressive as a slightly soft mid engined car can be).

I think you'll find that front toe-out improves turn-in, but then tends to induce understeer mid-bend.
