Anyone use/has used these for track use?

Fancied a change from my normal Pagid fast road pads as altho they do give good track braking, the heat gets to them & they only last a track day & are heavily pitted & cracked & long pedal at end of the day.

So bunged in a set of the Mintex & did the Mintex bed in procedure- 3x 30-0 & 4x 70-30 then leave to cool.

Then today went for my normal long cross country pads bed in blat, easy for miles then few gentle prods, moving onto harder use.

Only grief is after the harder use= pedal getting soft, braking distances way increased & lots of brake smoke & the nice aroma of very hot pads.

Hmmm I'm thinking this does not bode well for track use.

1144 aren't really hard enough for a heavy car on track. you need some Mintex F2 or F4's (never ever had them fade). Only issue is that they squeal a bit, eat discs, and are expensive, but do work......

One main thing in the 1144s is that they are cheap.

They're great on the Viva.

Very dusty though and as Peter says not that cheap but when you compare them to say RS14's they look a lot more reasonable.

One point though M1155's are 1144's for the heavier car...

Hmmm I may have mad an error on these then, tho the car is not that heavy plotty- about the same as ya chavette anyway, tho front engined so way different weigt distribution.

Yes there are other compounds I know that work well, but 3 times the price & some heavy on discs.

Its generally a nighmere to discuss pad types anyway, as it depends on how you use 'em. For example I know one chap who swears by a type of EBC for the same car & has done somat like 8 track days & several k of road miles on em, yet another chap same car & they lasted a mere 2 laps of the ring before being scrap!

How heavy is the car iguana, and what size discs (front) have you got?

I'm on my 3rd set of 1144 on an 1100kg ITR (282mm x 23mm vented fronts)...and they work just fine, road and track, save for the TONS of dust - my alloys need a refurb because of it.

Even on track (15-20min sessions and fresh fluid) have never had a squishy pedal. (Ooh - thought - you ARE using fresh brake fluid that's 5.1 or Super-DOT-4 or better??? Know it's probably a silly question, but you need to be sure.)

Not had car on weighbridge yet, but list in book is in the area of 960kg or 980kg (dep on which book!) not sure if the trim removed has made much weigh diference.

Size- 256mm (not sure on width- think 20mm) vented, (Brembo sport grooved jobbies) prob gunna go 280mm tho for better heat disipation.

Fluid- standard 5.0, done one track day + 100 miles on road, but no spongy with hard use on the old pads, hence dont think its fluid related (I was changeing fluid after every day, but think its a bit excessive & want to try & do it afer a couple of days) Might bite the bullet & go for SRF yet, just so fecking pricey.

Mintex make a C-Tech Comp Fluid thats a decent halfway house between Hellfrauds and SRF

£20 a litre

Just buy the bloody SRF and forget about it...

Weird. Your car should have sufficient braking for track-use.

I was going to ask how big the master cylinder is, but if you didn't have it with the older pads, the only things left are:-

- discs. How old? Any chance they've glazed. Shouldn't have, looking at spec.
- pads. Which is where you came in.

OK, I'm stuck (I know, it didn't take long!). Post up how you get on, won't you.

Yeh it is a bit odd & the whole car still stinks of brakes today!

Discs are fine & buffed & cleaned up after each day & grooves cleaned out (bit of a pain & I'll go non grooved next time)

I'll give these a go on track & see how it goes & post up here (I'll take some spare other pads along too tho!

Plotty- SRF- well its not just the £40 odd dosh for just one flush & fill really as 1L pretty much does the trick, more that im not convinced one fill will last a track season & thus more expense, been happy with boggo stuff & regular bleeding so far as I dont think its causing an issue.

After all most race teams bleed flud out after each race (well the porkers ive worked with that ran ATE racing blue did anyway)& most race cars have considerably less track time than on an average track day.

I've tried 1144s and 1155s on my 790KG Golf.

The 1155s were positively dangerous, they glazed over in less than two laps and almost put me in the tyre wall at Rockingham. Maybe this is because they are designed for a heavier car?

The 1144s are OK but after 5 years of racing I've come to the conclusion that Pagid Fast Road pads are just as good and less than half the price.

So thats what I use all the time now.

i use mintex 1144 c-tech pads with hi-spec 4pots. they work really well from cold, and can withstand alot of abuse. ill be trying some other makes after ive worn these out though, but i would'nt say no to them again.

alot better than EBC

Alex,We (well, ChrisP...) Bought a bulk load of SRF last year off ebay, I've not bled the brakes since flushing through with SRF about a year ago as now, done a 'ring trip, Donington x 2, Cadwell, Casle Combe and numerous road miles on the same fluid. Ask Chris, he might have some left...

I'm currently using DS3000s on my Golf, yes they're a lot of money but by far the best bite out of any pad I've ever used, they squeal *a lot* when cold but I just laugh..

Disc wear doesn't seem too excessive either.

Yeh the DS3000s have been in back of my mind, but I reckon they may be pretty agressive on ya discs as you do more days tho, plus Im a cheap skate & they are pricy

Anyway that last Donny day doesnt count as a full trackday, as after ya Torvil & Dean bit at Craners you were braking like a girl

If it's relevant, pretty sure DS3000 are not road legal. DS2500 is not road legal either for cars made after something like 2001 (can't remember). If your car is older than that then not a problem. All explained to me by the Ferodo importer but my senile mind has forgotten it now!
I use DS2500 in my Griff (c.1100kg) and they feel great. I have managed to overheat the rear pads though but they are being checked to see if they were faulty.

It does state not for road use on the DS3000 box..

All to do with some daft EU ruling regarding the use of hard metals in brake pad friction materials.

An obviously unfashionable view....
Did about 110 miles of hot laps round Pembrey on the MSE trackday on 9th. Mostly 10 -15 lap stints. Using EBC Green Stuff on the Chimaera 450 (c1100kg) with Tower View Racing Sevices front discs.
The brakes were absolutely outstanding, despite being worked hard, had total confidence all day, pedal feel / travel never changed (in fact better bite as the pads get hotter). Discs look perfect, virtually no dust.
Been using Green Stuff on all my cars for years and find them superb despite daily caning.
