Liked a couple of the comments on the second vid...
IMHO the first video is fine; the two cars are quick, but seem pretty courteous and careful with their overtaking.

The driving in the second video, I'll be honest, is very poor. To my eyes, it is a very fast, competent and experienced drvier, in a quick car, using the benefit of his pace to bully his way around the track, almost without anticipation of slower cars. Sure, some drivers are a bit dopey and perhaps not checking their mirrrors often enough, but it's still no excuse.

The most he pulls, at 4min 40sec on the Porsche 928 (I think this may be ukkid35?) into Steilstrecke was utterly idiotic; arriving with a huge speed differential, not waiting for consent to overtake and with nowhere for the other car to get out of the way in any case. It's just my opinion, but if he didn't want it, then the video shouldn't be public. biggrin

I wasn't sure quite what he expected from the BMW driver after the Carousel either? It looked like he'd got out the way as soon as was practical really.

100% agree - there's nowhere else to put your car as you exit Carousel. A little moment of patience and he could pass on the way up to the next corner, easy.

Same really as per the 928. The 928 was going slower than his 991 GT3 RS (why the should be a surprise to an experienced driver is another matter) but it is a heavier car, with longer braking distances, so a.) the chances of braking enough to pull into a tighter line are slim and .b) why the hell should he anyway? I've overtaken and been overtaken on the short straight between Steilstrecke and Carousel umpteen times and with cooperation, neither driver needs to do much, it's easy. In the end, that is effectively what he ends up doing anyway.

Actually I was fully aware of him and was trying to give him space, as we heard him drift around the outside

I didn't have a problem with that

However, someone in a very similar car overtook me in the braking area in to Breidscheid without consent and if I'd taken my line through the corner it would have been very unpleasant indeed

I may have some video of that and will post it if I do

You'll notice that he has his lights on Full Beam the whole time

thumbup I hope you didn't think I was 'speaking for you' there. I know from experience that faster cars passing you, even in odd places, is not always disconcerting, but can actually be okay - fun even.

I was, I guess, judging that move on the rest of the lap and the other passes. The comments on the video would indicate others see general issues. Certainly, it'd have been less risky had he passed on the straight rather than attempting and failing to do so under braking. hehe

Would be good to see if you get the chance to upload.

Curious how the revs suddenly rise into the Tiergarten compression. Almost like either wheelspin or a missed-shift, but I'm assuming the car is PDK?
All 991.1 GT3 are PDK but if your conrods snap of your crank it can spin a bit faster I guess. I am sure he said there was metal sticking out of the casings.

Their driving skills are impressive ! I normally take instruction at track days, but I’m considering getting into some sort of racing school, and getting a more track focused car (opened a separate thread on the latter). Any recommendations would be most welcomed !

I thought so too. Certainly seemed to make a better fist of passing traffic than the other bloke. More like the decent drivers I've had the privilege to be a passenger with on DN days.

I borrowed a friends Garmin 360 camera for a lap on DN20. The footage looks far better when placed in the middle of the windscreen. We were really struggling with the time we had hence the A Pillar mount which isn`t ideal. It also makes my welds look crap, they aren`t that bad honest biggrin

We`re following his brother is the Green GT3RS, although from the wide camera angle it makes it looks like I`m miles behind laugh He`d followed me for a lap then I followed him. These are the laps I love on these events, following closely in a car with very different strengths and weaknesses yet staying close to each other over the full lap. Nobody even looks at the laptime, that`s irrelevant what matters is the big grin on both our faces afterwards. smile

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVw26xXINZU

A very busy lap, I think we pass 16 cars which for a DN even is a lot !. This was after the red flag on Thursday and everyone went out after it reopened. There are a few examples of overtaking later in the video similar to what is posted above, approaching Steilstrecke the Yellow Ferrari car is particlarly slow and we all bunch up, but I move to the side incase the Porsches brake really hard, I can`t stop as well as them so position the car to avoid issues if they do slam on. Once past he stays right and everyone can pass safely. No diving past under braking.

Then a white 911 passes the burgundy one coming into Eiscurve. If the car ahead stays right that`s a common overtake. We wait until Pflanzgarten 3.

For those who read my trip reports when I post them and have messaged me asking if I`m still doing them, yes I am ! Although work commitments meant I haven`t even finished Ringmeisters from August never mind making a start on DN20

Hi All

Attended the Destination Nurburgring (DN20) trackday back in Sept 2018 with a couple of friends, one of whom has just received a speeding offence notice/fine via the post. Seems to be a road side camera.

Offence took place about 500m from the entrance to the Ring on a public road, not far from Apex rental cars by the looks of it.

Speed limit for the road 50 kph.....friend was alleged to be doing 56 kph (+6 kph equivalent to about 3 mph...)

Fine EURO 10.00

Letter apparently states the measuring device was used to detect the offence is confirmed to be gauged...

Anyone else had such a fine?

Not seen a fine personally but, in a way, fair enough. The good people of Nurburg are pretty accommodating to motorists, but I can see that excessive (56 is not 'excessive' BTW) speed might become tiresome, even for a dyed in the wool petrolhead.

Fair warning I guess to the rest of us.

Being fined for just 3 mph over the speed limit seems very harsh

However, our friend has remarked that the fine itself was not in any way unreasonable, despite the apparently minor infraction

I may well return home to find I have a similar punishment as we often drove in tandem

I have walked that stretch of road, and cycled it countless times, I would like my safety to be treated seriously, so if I return home to a similar fine I will pay it, but more importantly I will treat it as a wake up call - I obviously wasn't paying attention (if I am also at fault) because you would have to be asleep to miss the speed camera

10 Eyores and no endorsements/points on licence is not a huge penalty for being 'reminded' you are driving through a village.

Is anyone out this weekend? I'm currently sat at Folkestone waiting for train. 3 full days of TF tomorrow, Monday & Tues. And tomorrow is VLN layout! smile

Only thing is weather looks a little iffy.... Very cold with chance of snow flurries!

I was at the Ring back in September. On the way back to Calais we passed through a small rural German village. I got snapped doing 72kph in a 40kph zone.

EUR 430 fine!!

Apparently the law changed back in Summer 2017, traffic penalties are sent within the EU to the country/body (DVLA in our case) the car is registered in.

So EUR 10 is a bargain for finding this out!

We're out at the Ring now - staying in the Dorint for a very reasonable £53/night!

Quite cold - about 1-3c air temp, and 4-9c track temp - but dry and lots of grip available on a relatively quite track.

I'm not a fan of the VLN/GP track, but probably as I have almost no experience of the GP track, and don't particularly want to!

Only 2 closures I think today, and neither for very long. Although there were long lines of grit/sand where fluids have been dropped at 3 or 4 places around the track.

Yep, you wanna leave that kerb well alone, especially when it's wet.

I thought it had lost it before touching the kerb - not enough grip at the rear and a bit of a confidence lift caused this....

Yes, it was over-rotating before the apex but, nonetheless, in the wet, whether you're in or out of control beforehand, I'd not have the balls or skills to hit that kerb. Someone else here might say different of course.
