Re Motor Insurance policy no 70-------7,
As requested i can confirm that you are not covered to drive around the Nurburgring track in Germany.

I think you could quite rightly drive your car then, as you are not going on the Nurburgring....that is the GP circuit, you are going on a B road that is the Nordschleife

Good point

Sorry, I am a bit fick, i thought the old GP circuit that hasn't been used for years was called the Nurburgring. I have looked on Multimap and the current GP track is called the Nurburgring.

So I am going to adenau this weekend and i intend to drive around a bit and take in the scenery

Not sure what the Nordschleife is though, must be a nice scenic route around that area. I think i'll see if i can find it.

That's the spirit - "I was just driving through a nice little village with a castle and got involved in a traffic jam that lead onto a really scenic section of one-way toll road. You know, those Germans are right fast on the mountain roads!"

Cute! how about explaining it for me in English?
Never heard of this happening, and I've heard a few rental-car incident on the Ring stories.
thanks, francis

Kurt

absolutely not, didnt mean for it to come across like that if it did. you wouldnt want to anyway, imagine crashing, then having to produce your docs to the politzi (dont leave the scene - normal road rules remember !) only for them to say 'ring excluded'. at which point you can add a driving without insurance charge to your woes

not sure i could explain that in german... ;-)

jon. agreed. i was lost on this toll road looking for an exit, went round in circles all day finally found a way out just in time for a few beers to settle my nerves, unfortunately took the same turn on sunday morning and ended up trapped again...

man thats bad, somebody thinking English is my second language. Guess it counterbalance my proudest German-speaking moment - when the 2 Swiss chicks in Thailand thought I was Dutch. A few tall Chang beers probably helped that though...

When's your next Ring trip planned Alex?? I'll be there May 13-15 in an Opel Speedster, so if you want to see how I do in something a bit faster than the Smoadster, jump on in!
I still need a pax in your GT3 too

cheers
Kurt

Also.....

Be careful what you say to the AA in that they have a policy of not recovering you from Nurburg.

I didn't know this at the time, but after a day on the GP circuit/Southern loop (which was after a day on the Northern loop) I had no brakes left. I took some lunch in Adenau (where my car looked like this) tried to get some pads, then called the AA. As I was in Adenau, no problem at all - the operator (of course) had no idea a little pretty village in Germany called Adenau was near the most ferocious race track in the world! (Oh, and I thought it wise to remove the stickers before the breakdown man turned up!)

On a subsequent trip a friend had an engine expire (was actually the ECU burning out) and the AA refused to pick them up from the car park stating their "nothing to do with Nurburg" policy. (Of course he got trailered 10 miles away and called again!)

Incidently... I'll be there on Map 14th. Can't wait!

There have been instances of people going round the M25 looking for the right exit!!

cool - see you there Ben! You should be good and properly conditioned NOT to get sick during any pax laps after your little stint playing Master&Commander, no?
If you see a hired Opel Speedster or A3 Audi, say hi!

Hey Francis - any more info on that "extra ticket for not being insured if you have an incident on the NS with a policy that excludes the 'Ring"? I'm not totally being a smart ass, this is honestly the first I've heard of this - anybody else corraborate it??

It looks like the earliest I can get there will be late June and then again in August. But if we're at the 'ring on the same weekend you're welcome to hop in and give me some advice. Shame about the Smoadster - they're set to become a classic.

Cheers

Will do! I'll be there in my usual, Silver S2000. I may also have my bright yellow "Master&Commander" jacket on for easier identification

btw, still after comments on the Smoadster as girlie needs a car and I after a test drive I really quite like it and think it fits the bill. (I took over her car-purchasing decision after she was after a convertible beetle.. in PINK!!)

PS. I have NEVER been sick in a pax lap. Got rather concerned once at coming through Schwedenkreuz at 120 sideways, then backwards, but was never sick

self explanitory no? if your insurance specifically excludes the ring, you will be driving without insurance, its a public road. i dont know of anyone specifically getting done for it.

i do know of someone getting done for 'leaving the scene of an accident' by driving to the carpark and another similar case of a brit only defused by some kind locals and sabine...

I guess it depends on the language in the policy - my point was there is a difference between damage to your own car not being covered, and having NO insurance. For instance, drinking and driving. If you total your car after downing a few, maybe your insurance company wouldn't pay for your new car(?), but they would still be liable to cover property/personal damages to the car you T-Boned. Granted I ain't a laywer or insurance expert, but this seems like a potentially important point, since hospital bills/personal damages can make a no-insurance ticket look like a lunch bill.

Ben my cars will be silver too - and I didn't mean to insinuate you toosed your cookies easily, just was searching for a way to connect your sea faring adventure with the Ring (after Lovejoy's good one about proper preparation for Nürburg weather). My stomach is usually fine for pax laps also, except when I'm looking at the tiny LCD screen of a camcorder, or getting a pax in 964RSs the morning after an especially hard night drinking..

Will keep in touch Alex, I'll be at the NS at least 2 or 3 more times before getting shipped back to the US in October.

cheers
Kurt

I agree 100% with this one, and unless its a mere scratch on the bumper can't imagine anyone "defusing" or defending this. Leaving the scene of an accident on the Ring can mean deaths, especially for bikers who drive over any fluids leaked out as a result. I've seen some pretty horrific bike crashes (3 going straight into the arcom at Klostertal stands out) caused by cars dumping fluids and not stopping.

Its a good idea to always carry a yellow shirt or flag in the car (and a fire extinguisher), but in the past I've used my white helmet to warn upcoming traffic.

The convertible is considered desireable in some circles. Kurt is probably considered desireable in the same circles.

who woke Ed up??

By your fuzzy sputterings, Mr. Hammer-catcher, the same folks who want beetle cabrios (hot chicks), also want me. Brilliant reasoning!

now you can go back to sleep

Get that Smoadster for your girl yet Pikey?? Set aside a couple hundred bucks for a chip - can get 30hp easily from all reports.
