Thanks for all the responses. Mazda on track is an interesting suggestion, I've just bought an NA MX5 which I was considering taking to trackdays with my TVR and chopping/changing with a friend throughout the day. Maybe this makes me eligible thumbup

Also re the lotus on track suggestions, anyone know how open they are to letting other plastic British cars on track that actually have proper engines? biglaugh (I jest of course!)

You don’t need a Mazda to do a day with Mazda on track. I believe Lotus on track are more specific.

Yep, they're open to 2 seat sports cars - if you drop them an email they will be able to confirm for you.

LoT were kind enough to allow me to test my full race Anglia 105e amidst a load of Loti. Think there was a Zenos as well, as well as a few MR2 Mk 3 and an MGF. So car choice is a bit open at their discretion I guess.

I found the whole day very good, and the lead organiser was a sensible no nonsense guy. I’m an ex instructor and have seen some horrors, but I thought this was very well organised and the driving standards very good.

I have done 2 x Lot days where they were also running a Macca 720S in the field. Which unsurprisingly was way quicker than anything else. Wasn't a problem though and I thought the driving was of a good standard.

Only occasionally had problems with people not allowing you to overtake easily despite having caught them up

Agree with the general sentiment that there is a huge element of pot luck. However, MSE have been consistently the best at black flagging and having stern words with anyone being over exuberant or running out of talent early.

I've only been on weekday MSE days, but can't really fault the drivers or organisers.

i do have a question somewhat related to driving standards. I'm at the beginner end of the trackday world - 3-4 days so far and what i find after the sighting laps when your free to pass is holdups with others not knowing you want to pass. What would be the right/acceptable way to show your intention if they haven't got the message? I'm not really a fan of being right up the arse of another car and flashing lights seem to be against the tone of the day - i think flashing has even had a specific point made about it by the MSE briefing.
I do try to sit around 30-45deg rear quarter so i'm clear in the mirrors of the car in front but the message doesn't seem to always get across. i've been stuck behind some for a few laps.
Last thing i want is to rear end someone, so a suitable gap is left - maybe 5 car lengths.

I've been recently in that situation with an instructor on the passenger side and his advice after a couple of corners and running out of patience was "pass him now" even when the other guy was not actively indicating anything.

This makes me think there's not really much alternative... however, my approach would be just to go into the pits, "drive through" and come back to the track, hopefully, it will take you a couple of laps to catch him again, and by that time he may go into the pits for a break.


On the other hand, I've been in a complete opposite situation 2 weeks ago at Rockingham. Wet track after a rainy night, first laps on a new car on stty worn semi-slicks I was all over the place trying to hold the car while lighting my indicators and pulling to the right as soon as possible, and yet a couple of tts tailgated me for the whole lap without even trying to overtake nor keeping any kind of safe gap. They really pissed me off.
