Whilst leaving work today heard that someone died at the Goodwood circuit today during a track day....my deep condolences to the family.
If anyone has some more info..

Unfortunately that makes three fatalities on East sussex roads today in seperate accidents (including one I dealt with) so please take care out there!!

Ooh, not nice. That'll be the second fatality at a Goodwood trackday that I know of. Hope this doesn't close the place down for trackdays, I've been once, it was bloody great and I want to go again.

The previous death involved a chap in his Austin Healey. His mother sued afterwards, unsuccesfully, saying something like her son would have wanted it to be safe.

Not sure where you go from there.

Agreed.

Goodwood is a fast circuit with not a lot of runoff in places. The consequences of error can be very serious, as they were for this poor chap. But even so - there is runoff and they must have been very, very unlucky.

My thoughts go out to the families of both the driver and passenger.

I don't think we can presume that error was the cause - could also have been mechanical failure.

More to the point there is nothing to be gained by speculation.

Agreed. We were not there and cannot know the circumstances. Tragic.

I remember another fatality many years ago. It was a corporate day and a rear seat passenger was thrown from an Audi 80 as it left the circuit near Fordwater. The car rolled after it got caught a rut in the infield. Very sad.

It was apparently unrelated to the Festival of Speed, which was held at the track over the weekend

Sympathies to all involved

I've just been informed of this. The chap killed was a long standing client of mine. A great guy who has been a real inspiration to me over the years. Terrible, terrible news.

Without wishing to delve too deeply into what is obviously a tragedy, I would like to ask one question, if anyone knows the answer.

Was the day a normal type trackday (ie with the driver driving his own car) or was it a corporate day (ie 'drive a ferrari and other cars') that Mithril Racing run there.

I'm not sure what kind of event it was, but it was not his car.

There is a picture in the local paper - The Evening Argus - of the car partially covered up with a tarpaulin - on the nearside rear you can see 'Arrive and Drive' signwriting

Can we presume then, that the 'passenger in a critical condition' was an instructor ???

BTW, RIP to the driver, and hopefully a full and speedy recovery to the passenger/instructor

from a post on Ferrarichat

The passenger of the car was actually the instructor. His name is Matt Griffin and he normally races the Vauxhall Monaro. He instructs all over the country and is often seen at Goodwood.
Matt is presently in hospital suffering from a severely broken left ankle, punctured lung, 4 broken ribs and swelling to the brain.
It was a horrendous accident and does not warrant further explanation in respect for the deceased relatives. The son of the deceased driver was actually in the car behind.
I have just set up a forum on Matts web site if any of you would like to leave a get well message. I know it will do him the power of good.
Thank you all for your concern

Thanks for the info.

Coming so soon after the death of two well-known Porsche drivers in a Carrera GT in the US on a trackday, this really focuses the mind on the dangers involved on track.

My best wishes to Matt for his recovery and my condolencies to the family of the driver (especially the son who witnessed it - tragic).

Without appearing too morbid:

Which of the other 2 were you dealing with?

The A27 bypass lorry/van incident (which occurred 150 yards in front of me) or the A22 incident?
