Nurburgring 2021
Discussion
We're planning on going over in Sep/Oct, but purely to watch some live racing as the combo of Brexit & Covid has meant sourcing parts for some of our cars (e34 M5s particularly) has been painful.
We're also planning on using the visit as a parts shopping trip as some of our old parts suppliers won't deal with UK customers anymore.

See you there. What are you going to be driving?
I'll be in the Golf as usual
Well after this morning my trip is hanging in the balance…took the 570s out early for a B road shakedown ahead of next week and after 50 miles white smoke started coming out of the top through the engine cover, oil and water temps spiked to over 120c. Pull into a pub car park and get it recovered to my McLaren dealer. Noticed some coolant dripping out of it while we were loading the car on the flatbed. Praying it’s nothing worse than a cracked coolant hose but only have until next Sat to get it fixed. Dealer said they’ll get it into workshop and assess first thing Monday…you couldn’t make it up! My Nurburgring 2021 trip has faced every hurdle imaginable at this point! I'll be in the Golf as usual

At least it was in the UK instead of lap 1 of DN! Hopefully it's a simple fix
You’re absolutely right! I always go out for a shakedown a week before a big trip thankfully the problem came to light now rather than on the German autobahn or on a sighting lap! Hope you’ve given the Golf something similar!
My plan B is to drive my family car over and hire something from RSR instead. It’s interesting how much it costs now…for something reasonably quick like a Golf R its EUR 1500 for 16 laps on a track day so for two days that’s 3k and that’s on top of the cost of the track day entry! I wasn’t planning on spending so much but needs must…Faster stuff like BMW M2 or Cayman S is 2500 … makes running a McLaren look cost effective !

Cost per lap for rental is eye watering. Hence why they’re driven like every lap’s the last in qualifying, the driver’s life depends on it, his trousers are on fire and he needs to go to the toilet as soon a possible. My plan B is to drive my family car over and hire something from RSR instead. Lol! Last time I hired a car was 5 yrs ago but doing double days in that way was just prohibitive cost wise… it’s also more satisfying driving your own car around there. There’s obviously demand for it though with bucket list type trips for one off visitors but the excess on the higher end stuff is actually scary …EUR 150k on a GT3RS for example !I remember seeing a video of a McLaren blowing a coolant hose off as it went through the Foxhole
The cars following didn't stand a chance

Just checked the video on BTG, and that is not the incident I remember
Fairly certain that it was an Orange McLaren though

- ** that looks like a big wrek.
Roll forward to present and the £25 plus about a grand of labour to rectify, that was a poor engineering decision.

Coolant hose went pop that's the confirmed issue should have part by Wednesday...they checked all the other pipes which looked fine...hopefully no other issues come up after they've given it a run with the new pipe...fingers crossed!
Excellent! A simple fix. See you at the signing on next Monday afternoon

Thanks it's a relief! Weather looking a bit iffy at this stage although of course it can change easily over there...whats the deal with facemasks in Germany I read you need an N95 mask rather than a cloth covering?See you at the signing on next Monday afternoon

THe mask thing has relaxed a bit in some places, but still needed in shops, garages restaurants etc, but a cloth one is not accepted so just keep the usual medical type in your pocket and a spare in the car so you dont get caught out. Even the staff at the nurburgring carpak are allowed to not wear them now if the wish. Some still do but thats their personal choice so just respect others that wear them and all is good. If anyone is out sunday we are holding a meet at Fudgy's ice cream parlour at 5pm.
