I would highly recommend to do it as a trackday as the track is much quieter, driving standards tend to be better and you will be able to get a lot more laps than TF which I think is usually only 2hrs in the evening rather than from 9-5.
TF can run all day depending on which day you go. The biggest problem really is track closures. We did 12 laps in a day and spent a lot of time waiting for cars to be recovered or fluids to be cleaned

Thanks - wasn't aware of that. Other benefit of trackday is not having to come in and just keeping her pinned along the straight smile

Last year I went solo and the few days away from the family on my own were great and you can come and go as you please. Visited Burg Eltz which is a spectacular medieval castle about an hr from the Ring ( some derestricted autobahn along the way too) which is well worth a visit. I'm over there on 28th Jun to July 2nd with trackday at Spa on the Wed and the Ring on the Fri so if you're over around those dates happy to have a beer and or a pizza or something! Defo book a trackday and an instructor as if it's your first time much better environment to learn in and an instructor v helpful at watching for faster traffic as well.

If your other half might be up for a bit of hanging out in a nice little city while you visit the ring, stay in koblenz and drive to ring each day. Can combine it with lovely day trips (castles, vineyards etc) together.

I'm finding this thread quite ironic as PH is where I made most of my car friends. Getting involved in the local meets is a great way to make new friends.

It’s a great place to meet people if your that way inclined.
We’re very social and open and have helped many folks over there over the years . 1 that stands out was an Irish guy dropped his bike and broke his ankle, one of our group stopped to help , came back to the car park to find the guys mate and told him what had happened and we ran him down to the hospital as it was their first time there . They were nice guys so that night we picked them up from their digs that was in the middle of nowhere and took them back to Adenau for a few beers and a bite to eat , we made them get a taxi back though , we’re not that nice !
We met 2 Irish guys the first time we ever went that stayed in the same hotel and they met us there every year for a few years after , I went to one of their weddings and visited him in New York after he moved there .
we also met a couple in the car park of the Blau ecke and it turned out his wife wasn’t interested in the place so he now also joins us on our yearly trip , and travels from Kent to attend our Halloween parties too .
But we’ve also met our fair share of self important knobbers too to put it into context .

I've done it solo, staying in Adenau. By the time I'd parked up and walked into reception I was already chatting to people! Everyone in the TF 'staging' area was open for a chat.

No one cares what you've driving / riding / previous experience, just the fact you're there and will IME offer advice / light hearted ribbing etc.

Off the back of this thread maybe we should have a "trip imminent" thread? When someone's heading to somewhere like the ring, in a small group or solo, just whack a post up with invitations to join.

In my experience car stuff is better as a group, and even a loner can spend most of the time in their own car enjoying their own company biggrin

Not a bad shout. I’d never really made going to the Ring a priority for fear of binning my car more than anything else, but I’d certainly be more keen with a group than on my own.

I guess the added benefit of trackways is, I believe, covered by some companies under heir insurance or you can buy track specific insurance. Mitigates some of the potential cost.

Still, just feels like the ‘ring is a place you’re far more likely to bin it than the usual tracks I’m used to in England.

Oh, absolutely. Get an instructor and drive it like a B road and you're very likely to be ok. Cannot account for spillages of fluid, if that happens, it's very bad luck.

Hmmmm, now that could be fun…..instructors cost much?

1 lap is free with DN https://www.dnevents.com/event-dates/nurburgring-i...

Plenty of alternatives too that will be between free and 400 euro. Could do a lot worse than contacting misha at Apex if you an alternative option. Plenty of options.

We’ve done tf for almost 20 years , picked out a couple of guys who looked like they knew what they’re doing and blagged a few laps with them and learnt a lot from them for free. I’ve had a couple of close calls over the years but go mid week with the opinion , like we do , that your not a racing driver and back away from the guys in a hurry and you’ll be fine .
Actually 2 of the guys I sat in with have raced in the 24hr race there .
I’m not an instructor by the way , nor do I have a vested interest in the track or it’s facilities.
Jut a daft builder who likes cars !

Looking into it I'd be happy to do a track day, much prefer the idea of only being on track with like minded individuals.

I remember the first time I experienced lift off oversteer in my 182 coming up to Paddock Hill at Brands. Makes me think a load of tourists in M3s and porsches who've never done a trackday mixing it with buses and ring taxis must make for a pretty dangerous environment.

Definitely do it. I don't believe they allow buses anymore.

To the first timers at the track, if any of you are a bit wary of going on track and would like some help please consider this.
As an instructor at the Nurburgring for ten years now if you want some help give me a shout. I have 24 years of driving and riding the track behind me but I specialize in car instruction.
I get really busy throughout the season but I live there so am not far away. I will always try and help people if I have a window in my schedule, especially for the newbies

Weirdly contemplating the same thing as all my car pals seem to be all talk and no action even when it comes to booking track days!
