NO, don't listen to anyone who tells you to get a BMW for a cheap (or expensive!) trackday cars, you will get your ass well and trully kicked buy 205gti's

I Marshal a lot of track days, BMW's are useless, Get a Peugot 205 gti, you'll be grinning permantly, and they cost next to nothing.
If you want to spend a little bit more and want something a bit different get a Rover 220 Tomcat, there are a couple that take part in the Castle Combe saloon car championship (though they have been missing from nearly all the races this year) and they are amazing to watch!

If it was me though (and it will be VERY soon) I'd get a pug 205 and go and kick some german butt!!

Hi all, first time on the forum, looks great, ref the trackday car I think that CombeMarshal is closest to the mark. I race a 216 Gti and whilst not as quick as the Tomcat Turbo the handling more than makes up for any lack of power. We sometimes use trackdays to learn a new circuit and being on slicks are normally the quickest cars on the day or certainly in the top few. Honestly, you wouldn't believe the sort of cars that you can just drive away from with a standard, ish 1600, great fun. These Rovers sell for around £2500 to £3000 but most have been race cars from new having been bult by Rover Sport for the Dunlop Rover Gti Cup and as such have never been road registered so a trailer is a must.

It's not so much how fast it goes as to whether it can powerslide - and front wheel drive cars aren't very good at that.

If gooning about isn't your thing, then the 205 is pretty much unbeatable. For me I really prefer rwd with it's slight squirm out of corners and detailed steering feedback.

You think the back of a front wheel drive car will stay stuck and the front will slide??.. You better try it sometime.

On another note.. I was told yesterday that import MX5's (Eunos roadsters) have a limited slip diff, whereas MX5's don't. That would swing my decision.

Oh, I've had front wheel drive cars sideways but you can't get the four wheel drift powerslide on the way out of corners in quite the same way as a rear drive car. It simply gives you more cornering options.
