At very short notice a mate & I have arranged to visit the Nurburgring in his Caterham. The weekend we have chosen to go is 10 & 11 Sept - which by a fluke is the same weekend as the Belgian GP!!

We have decided to go via Spa and then head to the 'ring. Can anyone give us any info on the route to take from Spa? I remember reading somewhere a while ago (not sure if on Pistonheads) that one of the routes from Spa to Nurburg was in poor condition.

Also are their any hotel recommendations near the 'ring?

If anyone has taken a similar route and can give us the benefit of their experience it'll be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Hi

check out www.nurburgring.org.uk/ for all you need. The opening times at the ring are restricted, but I checked and the place is open the afternoon after the GP, Mon 12th Sep. So that gives you an easy mornings drive there and an afternoons hooning. I'm sure many will be doing the same.

Can't help with a route, but the Ardennes/Eifel region is really nice and you'll enjoy whichever way you go. Don't know about any roads in poor condition, but from the German roads I've seen I reckon they'd describe the whole of the UK as 'in poor condition'.

well, you'll have a great trip. the Sa - ring trip is one of the last great motoring mecca's.

the www.am-tiergarten.de is THE place to stay in Nurberg. it overlooks the ring, and the castle, is only 500m from ring entrance AND it has the Pistenclause in the basement. this is the local race bar/restaurant. signitures and pics all over the walls etc. its owned by the shmidt familly (sabine is now of TOP GEAR fame - though she has been around for a while now )
have the steak on a slate - you'll know it when you see it!

there is several ways to the ring from spa, best to stay on the main routes in a caterham. very scenic. don't worry about a twisty "fun route", you have plenty of time for that at the ring. you'll just get lost and some of the routes are VERY bad. i can't be more specific as i follow sat-nav!

this is getting me all nostalgic now...must start planning the next trip. its over a month now since i've been

From Spa I would suggest E42 south.

Turn off at Prum (immediately after single carriageway section of E42}

410 to Gerolstein - Dreis - Kelberg

257 - 8km to Nurburg

A nice twisty bit of road to get you in the mood
