Wanted to do Track day last year and didn't get the chance, now seriously considering, but just working out what I need. I notice there is a lot of discussion on helmets. Any advice for a complete novice - I don't want to spend loads, for something only used a few times a year. I've come across a couple of examples from demon tweeks - both full face (is this the best?), BS6658 Type A, around £85. Would these be suitable or should I be looking more in the £160-200 and the SA2000 standard?

I also suspect I will need to silence my Griff's sports exhaust - any advice on suitable products?

Thanks in advance....

Hi Steve,

Yes, there is a lot of discussion on helmets, but it really boils down to what price you put on your head!
Buy a full face bike helmet if you're likely to use it on a bike. Car helmets are a bit tougher and will take more knocks before becoming unsafe, but are usually more expensive.

Open face may be better as it gets extremely hot in a TVR on track, especially queueing up in the sun!

Needless to say you must go and try lots of them on before buying.....

One of the main differences with car based helmets is their fire retardant lining. If your helmet gets damaged - bin it. How much is your head worth?

No helmet will take more 'knocks' than another if gets dropped, etc. You may also want to consider a polycarbonate vs fibreglass lid. If you buy a car helmet and use it on a bike then a) you may not be able to use it on a bike trackday due to it not having an ACU sticker on, b) an open cockpit car lid often has aerodynamic aids which means you will get buffeted around all over the shop if you use this on a bike. Some car helmets also restrict movement on a bike.

Buy a dedicated one for each.
