To share a track-day-car? A mate and I are talking about going 50:50 on a track-day project!

We both have other toys to use at weekend etc so it will be very track biased. Storeage is not a problem, nor is a suitable tow car. (It will be trailored)

Has anyone else gone/thought about going the shared route? What problems have you faced? How did it work out finacially?

All advice most welcome.

Paul.

Never done it myself but I know some who have.

When its all going well its great, with half the costs of the car, maintainence, track day costs etc etc.

The problem comes when one of you bins it or blows it up etc & how you then sort that out financially between you- it can certainly be a tough one to sort out.

We are at early stages at the moment. I was thinking of suggesting some kind of maintenance fund for the unforseen. I'm aware there may be pitfulls. Anymore are most welcome .... I know I have not thought of every one!

thanks

Paul.

buy a shed each.infact make a competition of it.see who can get the best trackday car for say £500
they dont have to be good.
then go out on track at the same time.
slow as you are you will have a total pisser of a day

go for it mate, im sure you'll have fun.

but, before you go for it heres a few things that i would work out first:

1)work out how much your each going to put into the project, both money and time. no point getting pi55ed off later when he's done nothing, and expects to drive it at the next track day!! probably after stuffing it into a wall in a trackday before.

same with money.

2)worked out storage, name on insurance and a system for working out paying for damage/repairs, "servicing" and other costs.

3)sit down with the bloke and have a brainstrom about what you both want to do, to ensure you dont have a clash of "artistic visions" when you want to upgrade parts of the car etc.

if you trust him and have a real laugh, then you'll probably have fun. but (hate to be the voice of doom) if you fall out are you willing to loose him as a good mate if it goes pear-shaped? if your not sure then be cautious.

if you go for it then post us the results!! especially pics!!

Paul,

I shared a car with a friend of mine and had no problems.

We only ever saw any issues when it came to spending cash upgrading the car. This was quickly fixed with a joint bank account. If the money is in the account, spend it on the car, if it's not then it was down to the instigator of upgrades to pay if the other person didn't agree.

I would do it again no problem, owning a track day car is a lot of cash which can easily be shared..... Go for it!

I've been sharing an Elise with a mate for 2 years now. Pretty much track use exclusively. So far its worked incredibly well. Main thing is to work out what each pays for and what to do if it blows up/crashes.

Shared ownership is a great way to go. In addition to the Elise I've owned a Ferrari and a couple of Lamborghinis shared with a mate. Makes owning toys a bit more justifiable...

Yep sort of shared a car, but it was a budget car, only problem is TIME is the real cost so you've both got to put some work in. Keep it cheap & simple & you'll be fine.
