Track Day Car Hire

You don't want to use your own car on track so what's the alternative?

An increasing number of companies are offering cars for hire on track days. Some are race cars which teams are trying to get some off-season return from and others are dedicated all round hire cars.

Two new companies have appeared on the scene recently. The first is Cars4Tracks which has two Caterhams available - a Superlight R and a Superlight R Race Car. Or, if you're after a tin top then Online Racing have a 944 available.

Neither are cheap to hire and it's only really a cost effective option if you share the day with some friends. The 944 weighs in at £595 for the day whilst the Caterhams come in at £599.99 or £649.99 for the race car. On top of those costs you'll also need to buy space on a track day.

In the scheme of things it's still cheaper than buying a track car yourself and incurring the maintenance and consumable costs yourself, but it's a bit scary when the costs are so obvious with the hire option!

Cars4Tracks are offering 10% off to PH readers though until the end of 2004!

Bound to be a big new industry. Why own and insure when you can just hire. If you get an open pit lane day and there's two of you sharing.

Hardly the first on the scene - bookatrack have been doing this for a while - Pug 205 and a bunch of Caterhams. Allegedly maybe even a Radical next year

I had one of the BaT Caterhams at Donington on Tuesday - I decided that as I'd had 3 sets of tyres in 12000 miles on the S2000 I would try hiring a Caterham for half a day and only use my own car in the afternoon.
Considering a new set of tyres for the S2000 is at least £350, using someone elses car seemed like a good idea. A decent thrash around a track for a day takes a lot of life out of the soft Bridgestones fitted to the S2000, even in the wet.

It was well worth the money, and I shall be doing it again in the future - get keys, thrash car, hand keys back, walk away.

Mark,

Was it C4T SL? If so, I had it at Cadwell on the 2nd November.

I thought it was also a great thing to be able to do - turn up, get in, drive, hand the keys back, go home.
