Audi Powered Track Day car to be launched at Autosport Show


Westfield are to launch a successor to their Hayabuse engined XTR2 track day car with the Audi Powered XTR4 is to be launched at the Autosport International 2004 show at the NEC (8th – 11th January 04)

The new XTR4 designed and built at the Westfield factory in Kingswinford, West Midlands is fitted with the 1.8 195 BHP (standard) DOHC turbo engine from VW Audi Group.

There have been lots of other major changes to the new Westfield XTR4. It now comes with a larger cockpit and a different driving position to that of its predecessor. The XTR4 also has an all-new body styling at the rear of the car, a new rear wing, engine cover and roll bar.

Chris Smith commented, "The XTR2 introduced Westfield to a completely different market. Now with the introduction of 1.8 Audi turbo engine we’re able to offer a car to a broader market place, and not just to bike engine car fans ".

Westfield Sportscars will also be offering 225 BHP engine packages and performance upgrades.

Hmmm I just test drove an Audi A4 1.8T with the 160 hp version of this engine. Smooth as silk but you put your foot down ... and two seconds later you get a stream of torque. That was one of the reasons I decided against the A4, the throttle response is non existent.

In an A4 thats OK, since the whole car works well as a prestige car, but for small lightweight cars that are meant to be fun to drive I think it is a big problem, since throttle response is a big part of car control.

I think you will find that lossing 50% of the weight will help turbo lag no end.

I think it's quite a bit more than 50% you'll be losing too

The busa XTR comes in at 400kg in race trim

Does anyone know what the gearbox is out of ??

i'll be amazed if the Audi engined XTR is only 400kg's!

Probably not, but even at 600kg it will be 700-800kg lighter than an A4!

Think the gearbox is Audi too....seem to remeber they use a transaxle. But I may be wrong.

I was at the factory in August and the Audi powered car was in the carpark.

Speaking to one of the guys working at Westfield apparently Westfield were having problems with engine reliability, i.e. the engines kept on going bang- big time! (at that time the reason was unkown).

Hopefully this is now sorted as it should be an interesting combination, Audi powered XTR2 - life gets better and better.

What gearbox is used - obviously a sequential box (like the BEC) would be cool and would improve the lap times.

Can't wait to test drive and maybe buy or build one for road and track?

Yep I was right, the Audi 5000 used a transaxle.

Yep I would have thought it would be pretty heavy and the throttle response will always be dulled that little bit by a Turbo.

I too have heard stories about them going pop a lot.
