Lads,

It's time for me to enter the real, non-student world! I start work tomorrow as a headhunter. I'm excited and of course a bit apprehensive. I thought it might be a good time to use some of the pistonhead real world experience! So, has anyone got any advice on how to conduct myself on my first day?

Cheers,

Michael

its a masonic tradition for new boys to wander around with their cock hanging out

So to make sure you have that advantage make sure you remember to get your cock out and wander around with it swinging in the wind

If you are ever unsure or stuck, never be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help.

Unless you got your cock trapped in filing cabinet on your first day.....

Never admit you swore at someone. Say they must have misheard you.

Bear in mind you're being watched and judged all the time - even when you go out socially with colleagues.

Don't stand with your hands in your pockets. I hate that.

You've made your point, recruitment consultant. Anything constructive to add?

It's a good point - when a recruitment consultant rings me and tells me they are a head-hunter, I immediately think they aren't worth talking to.

My experience of recruitment consultants is 90% bad. Hopefully you can be one of the good eggs.

Unfortunately I rate most in the same league as estate agents and solicitors.

Occasionally I come across a good one though.

Leave your arrogance at home is my advice.
Work smart. Dress smart. Be yourself. Get good results.

I've heard alot about this. The company I will be working for is new and reasonably small but already extremely well respected. It is also quite specialised in that the main focus is medical rather than say graduates.

Keep it very quiet with your colleagues, treat it like your first meeting with your girlfriends parents. Show interest in what those around you do, listen more than you talk and show willing (without brown nosing)to help.

Accept that you are the bottom rung of a very high ladder...for the first two years ( at least)you are nut a head hunter....you are in fact the tea making telesales office bh !!

No wonder the recruitment industry is so completely fked.

People who've never even had a job doing recruitment. The mind boggles.

Somewhere, to me, would be gaining experience in the sector in which he'll be recruiting, before doing the actual recruiting himself.

How the hell can you know what to look for if you have absolutely no real-world experience?

You won't get on with everyone but try to remain professional at all times. it might seem like a big world at first but you might be surprised how often familiar faces keep cropping up -and when you might need their assistance or they be your boss. Especially in the world you are in.

Also if you don't know something don't bullst. It will blow up in your face. Especially if you are recruiting in to specialist or technical roles. As a graduate of Chemical Engineerng and working in oil trading you'd be amazed how many recruiters talk rubbish in a vain attempt to make out they know something they clearly have no clue about. They don't impress anyone and I don't return their calls.

Also, not to labour to much the point already made but definitely drop 'headhunter'.
