Hi,
My nephew is really finding it difficult getting a trainee job, he has (I think 6 gcses).
He really wants to get into IT but all companies are looking for people with experience.
He would be willing to work for a very low salary to start to get his foot on the ladder.

He's applied for a IT training company, but the spaces filled up too quickly, he has also sent out hundreds of applications and CVs but has only yielded two interviews
He just needs to get the initial foot up and to show what he can really do.
perhaps if someone has a company who is willing to give him two weeks (perhaps for free) to show what he can do, he would be up for it......

With clauses in his contract to say he has to stay for at least 2 years the company is going to get a bargain.
Eg...

10k training over 2 years
I would expect him to be productive at the latest 8 weeks so over a 2 year period the same trained person would be

Lots of IT companies out Bracknell way - not sure about how many offer entry level schemes though.
One worth checking out is Fujitsu - I think a large helpdesk for one of their MOD contracts is based in Bracknell - as far as I know they take on school leavers/GCSE educated staff.
I think the agency they use is Kelly Services, might be worth giving them a speculative call/mail?

Has he tried any of the Local Authorities or NHS organisations within commuting distance? Despite public sector cutbacks, there are still many opportunities. It might be that he has to compromise if the are no specific apprenticeships available and simply apply for an administrators role. Once inside an organisation, he can, over time, improve his skills through in-house training and part-time study, often funded by his employer. Good luck!

I don't wish to be negative but why IT? It's a pretty academic area, whilst we don't employ graduates exclusively most staff do have one or more degrees and those that don't have A levels and other qualifications. So it's a bit of an uphill battle without them, even entry level help desk roles are going to be difficult to get because they are seen as entry level for all. The hardware side might be easier, but I've little experience there. The Moose said:

This is important, saying he wants to get into IT is like saying he wants to work in finance or construction. He needs to be more focused on an branch, or job in IT. .
Once he knows what he wants to do in IT, then he needs to do some training courses in that field, say ITIL, Prince2, ISEB etc, anything that shows he's got some direction. Unfortunately IT training is not cheap.
Another way to get into IT is through first line support (help desk) as you don't need an in depth technical knowledge. He can then look moving on from there once he as a good grounding.
I think initially help desk is the way to go, I think longer term hardware or software support.
Hmmmm prince2 training that would cost a fortune when I did it a few years a go I know it cost the company I worked for a lot of money. Probably better for him to start at the bottom and work his way up.
