Would you do a job doing something you'd really enjoy which only paid 10% of what you get now? This is my current predicament.

I couldn't afford to live on 10% of what I get paid now. If you can then why not?

I'm an IT contractor but job satisfaction and location matter to me more than rate so if the question was a simple "would you take less money for a more enjoyable job" then yes I would smile

How old are you?
If that 10% will cover all your bills, and give you some spending money, then take it.

This reminds me slightly of the SLK thread from earlier. Is the OP just trying to boast that he earns 200k? biggrin

How does a 23 yo 'earn' £200k pa?

I can only assume it is commission based software sales or a very successful small business as sole trader.

Well done either way.

Re: 'doing your bit' - very noble intention. Not sure how misplaced that intention is in 2012.

Good luck either way.

Unless you were earning footballer wages I fail to see how anyone could live off 10% of their salary, bearing in mind the average is about £26k per annum.

Everyone thinks they would do it in principle.
Very very few people would do it in reality.
I know I wouldn't unless it was something spectacularly good which would guarantee me an enjoyable life forever.
So if someone is going to pay you 20k to travel the world for the rest of your life to write reviews on 5 star hotels and oral sex in each country- then possibly, but if it was something like a marshall at a racetrack then its just not worth it.

aren't all marshals volunteers?

thats why i never looks any further into it as i can sit at home for free, instead of wasting good money to stand on a wind swept rainy circuit for no financial reward

No.

Dr Johnson, " Everyman thinks meanly of himself for having not become a soldier."

If you five more years on the money you are on and aren' t a total dhead with the cash, you are pretty much independent for life.

You were infantry werent you? Didnt you have a 12 month community order to serve about a year back? If you're on £200k, I'll take your job and you can go back to being fired at. In fact, I'll give you £10k a year sweetener while i'm at it.
