LNER at Newcastle. Get in quick as they often pull the advert early.

Quick question - I've seen it stated with a few train companies that you have to be within 1hour of the station or they will reject your application.

Is this a hard and fast rule, or would I have a chance to explain that I'm happy to relocate if my application was successful?

It's a becoming a hard and fast rule. Not to be rude but they'll be plenty of applicants who live nearer.

I wouldn't want to be commuting over 40mins, personally.

Yeah I understand, but it's a bit of a shame as I've relocated quite happily and quickly for jobs previously and quite fancy going up north somewhere, but have little to no preference where.

I can't complain though - I'm within an hour of Bristol and Birmingham where I am at the moment as hubs, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for something local, thanks smile

Had an email from Scotrail as they are updating their records. Wanted to know if I was still interested in role
And if any personal circumstances had changed.

It’s got to be a positive my details are still on record right ?

What does a trainee train driver earn?

Currently thinking about a career change - currently working in Forensic Biology - done 26 years and fed up of my employer but enjoy the work.

Is 46 too old for a change like this? How long does it take to complete the training?

Any info appreciated.

My best mate was over 40 when he became a train driver, so it shouldn’t be a problem for you.

Cheers Bud.

The ad I've seen doesn't mention salary - I appreciate initailly I'll take a hit until fully trained. I'll try and read some of this thread this evening to try and get some real life experience but currently have visitors !

It’s usually around half the qualified salary.

About 50%, then when qualified some pay a slightly lower rate for the 1st year.

How much are you currently earning?

Probably £33k-ish in their training year.

Nope, not too old. Training takes 12-18 months (lower end) usually, but a lot are 2 years at the moment. You would probably be on a higher salary after passing your 'rules" exams, which would result in a higher average for the second year of training.

My second trainee passed out today funnily enough! He is 48 (and I am young enough to be his son hehe)

Give ti a crack!

There’s also a chance to claim traveling time and get some overtime in if you have to travel from your home depot to the training school. It was a big help for me at the time as I’d took a big pay cut.

Trainees at my TOC go onto full drivers pay after just eight weeks. Youth of today don’t know they were born etc etc….

It was 12 month on training wage when I started 20yrs ago, how things have changed. My training wage was £15k and there was no opportunity for overtime whilst training.
But it was worth the wait as I went to 80% once passed out then after another year it was 100%.

Things are very different nowadays

Yes, much worse.

Well actually roughly the same year one adjusted for inflation but year 2 is 70% and year 3 is 78% before year 4 is full wage.
