Chatting to a friend earlier, she has been struggling to find employment recently.

She has now been offered a job at a local business.

It is a sales position and the wage offer is £4.50 per hour plus commission.

Is this allowed?

There is no minimum wage guarantee to allow her to build up a client list to gain some sales.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yes, it is legal.

At uni I worked in a sales job for £5 an hour plus commission. Depending on the payment period (day/week/month), she will need to calculate her average hourly wage including commission for that period and see if it is still less than minimum wage. If it is indeed still below the MW figure, then she has grounds for complaint.

The employer has to pay at least the NMW. It can do this partly by commission, but there must be a baseline which equals or exceeds the NMW.
