Your top tips please for keeping a bit of a distance from the permy's politics and BS. Maybe it's where I've been there for quite a while...

It's getting me down a bit at the moment and I'm aware that to keep on the good side of management and have a long and profitable contract I need to keep out of all the nonsense. I also don't want to appear rude and unsociable by not getting involved at all with people, because in turn that also leads to lots of slagging off!

I try to focus on the conny ca$h but sometimes it's not enough to keep me motivated.

Perhaps it's time to move on, but it's a decent rate, nice work and fairly close to home. Other than that I can't stand the place.

Smile. Say "contractor". Shrug. Turn back to keyboard.

That's always just worked for me, although it can get more awkward when they then start asking about going contracting.

I should add I'm a contractor in engineering, not IT (use the term engineering loosely) and the mentality of some of my colleagues is that of being at school, not a grown up place of work.

If I was always working alone on a computer I might find it a bit easier to keep my head down and ignore it I guess!

I'm an engineering contractor - just think of the rate and get on with it. If you're really fed up, you're a contractor, just find a another job. In my view that's a the whole idea of being a contractor, if you're not happy move/want more cash just move on.

If it suits your life then just plan what you're going to do with the money and crack on with your work. The harder you work, the quicker the time will go.

If nothing helps at all then it's time to move on. I found myself getting sucked in to the perm staffs whinging and moaning a few years ago, and guess who got let go.... it wasn't them.

As said above, just tell them it's nothing to do with you. I learned after a few hard lessons to say "that's no concern of mine" and if pressed to say "I'm here to deliver XYZ. I'm doing it. Now if you will excuse me..."

I fell foul of a trap a few years back and walked for failing to watch my tongue. At the last place someone baited a similar pratfall for me, twice, and I ducked it twice with the "that's no concern of mine" line. You should do the same.

The more I focus on the results the less the politics impinge on what I am doing and the happier I am. Just keep banking the dollars. It will one day end, you will deliver the goods. Now get on with it.
