Hi all.

I've worked for a major building supply Company for 12 years. I was asked to change my role in November 2016, from warehouse worker to admin, as all of the branch admin staff had been made redundant.( Over 100 staff throughout the Company)

My job title hadn't changed though, as I was still required to perform some warehouse duties, when necessary. I was often told what a great job I was doing and I know that was true.

The problem was that far too much was expected of me, as I was still expected to do a lot of the old role and I would have needed another 2-3 hours every day to do everything.

I came back from a nice relaxing holiday this week to be told that my job had been given to someone else in the branch, who "would have more time to do the job," and I was being given my old role back.

This would include all the additional work that was causing me problems with my new role. To say that I am fuming would be an understatement. I've never felt less valued in my life. I'm not expecting any solutions, I just wanted to put my feelings down.

I'm confused. You're getting your old role back, but you have the responsibilities for your new (second) role too, only the job has been given to someone else?

Do you have ANY of this in writing?

OP - your post is somewhat confusing.

Are you doing your old job, your new job, or the worst bits of both?

Sorry, I've been awake since 4 am! I've been given my old role back in the warehouse. When they gave me the admin job, I was still in the warehouse and they still expected me to do a lot of my old job.

They eventually realised that I was being given too much to do, but instead of taking away the extra work that was causing me problems, they gave my new role (admin) to someone else "who would have more time to do it" and have told me that I'll be performing the warehouse role once again.

This will include the work that was causing me to struggle with the admin job.I'll still be expected to do the admin job to cover holidays/sickness etc as well.

Nothing was ever put in writing, as I don't think that my official job title was changed. I hope that this clarifies my rant.

I'd start with a very polite and reasoned request for a written description of your duties to 'make sure you meet expectations'. You can then use this as a structure for discussion about what parts of the job you're unhappy about or you don't think you have enough time for. If you've never raised it as an issue or manfully struggled on they might not even realise they are asking to much.

Thanks for your reply. My Supervisor has seen first hand for months how much I've had to do, but hasn't changed much, apart from getting me a little help when things haven't been busy elsewhere.

My job description merely says that I have to do anything that is reasonably required of me, in my role. That covers almost anything in reality.

I sent my Manager an email today expressing my displeasure at the handling of my change of role, particularly the part where everyone was told while I was on holiday. I thought it safer than telling him personally, as I'd probably be jobless soon after!

It has become quite common at companies to cut staff and load the "old" jobs onto the remaining staff. Employers and employees know there is always someone right around the corner ready to take your job. You should have asked for a payrise. If workload permanently rises, say, 25%, then pay should go up 10-20%. Do more, pay more. Take the extra money for extra work, keep schtum and get cracking.

I'd already told my Supervisor that I wanted a rise, due to the extra work, but now that extra work has apparently gone, then so has my rise. I'm only three years or so from retirement and could do without the stress.

I am a little confused, what is your 'replacement' going to be doing if you are still expected to be doing admin plus warehouse ?

Does this other person have other work too, and you will be splitting the admin work while both continuing your 'normal' roles?

I will not be doing the admin job now. Yes, the other person has other work too. The entire problem is that the management thinks that the admin job is just a few hours work, where in fact, it's a massive amount of work.

I know it's not long to wait, but I always give more than necessary at work, so when someone says it's not good enough, I really take it personally.

The Manager apologised to me today and agreed that it was handled badly, so I'm going to try to let it go. I'll be retiring a little before my official time, so maybe I should just say fk it!

To play Devil's Advocate for a moment... what if, during your relaxing holiday, they gave someone the admin work alongside their usual work and they managed to cope with it?

Maybe, although done badly, it is a supervisory / management decision to let you go back to your old role and just let someone else have a go at the admin role for a bit, since they've been doing it for your holiday cover anyway.

Either way, doesn't sound like much to get too stressed about - go back to being good at your old role and sit and wait out retirement wink
