What should go into a good cover letter?

Currently applying for new roles both within the industry I work in (Banking/Relationship Manager) and outside of that (Retail Management/Office Manager/HGV Driver).

I feel like my CV needs some tweaking which would be a great help if anyone could take the time to review it for me but the cover letter really has me stumped. Last few times I've applied for roles I've not needed one and it seems like a strange concept to me because previously when I've been hiring people I've done it with their CV and a phone call which led to face to face interview etc.

Any help or suggestion's people may have would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Dan

CV is a third person resume of your impact in your last 3 roles or so (on top of other stuff).

Cover letter is a first person version outlining, in the 3 paragraphs, why you can do the job, how you will enjoy the job and how you will fit the organisation.

Happy to look over your CV if that would help.

Good luck!.
