Apparently I had a H&S woman close to tears.

I said what you did was nasty not that you were nasty to her. Using her mistake as an opportunity to have a go which you justify on the basis that people doing her job somehow deserve it! That's a pretty big chip on your shoulder about HR!
I can honestly say I have never had a go at anyone based on their job or anything other than their individual actions or inaction.
Not sure why the OP has bothered posting this but you keep referring to HR when he didn't mention them - it was H&S which is a whole different department that needn't concern itself with pop psychology unless there's an underlying safety issue. I can honestly say I have never had a go at anyone based on their job or anything other than their individual actions or inaction.
For me its just two different people with attitudes at different ends of a scale.

I too am confused as I don't see anything wrong with what the HR lady said. Some people need to lighten up and not take things literally.
Read the title of the thread; H&S, H&S, H&S.There is a thread in The Lounge for trivial stories like this, OP should have gone there....

Who said I was nasty to her.
I simply pointed out the error she made in saying what she said.
People in her line of work go out of their way to make peoples lives a misery at every opportunity. They throw their weight about costing people their jobs for any petty reason they can think of. Oh one of your brakes is not on, yellow card. You took your glove off, red card. Off the job.
And no, I have never been asked to leave a job for any other reason than the job has finished, on to the next.
Sure I'm going to dig myself a hole here and going off topic.I simply pointed out the error she made in saying what she said.

But we really are not all as bad as each other, there are many decent ones who work with common sense.

H&S guy at my place often pokes fun at it all, honestly one of my favourite guys there. Just because the job is quite trivial doesn't mean they are. Can't say I like HR though. But we really are not all as bad as each other, there are many decent ones who work with common sense.
HR can be a nightmare, worse some places than others.
One job I had, I was working on a project which unfortunately included involving the HR. We were looking over the purchase of some stuff on her laptop with me being stood as far away as possible whilst still being able to see the screen. The prices were coming up in euro's because some of the network traffic was routed through servers, in Ireland. At this point, I should mention that Mrs. HR was Irish (Irish name, Irish accent) but denied being Irish totally, insisting she was from Yorkshire.
She asked "Why is everything in Euros" I replied with, "It thinks you're in Ireland" to which she replied very curtly "It could be any country in Europe, not Ireland, Why Ireland, why would it think that"
Because that's where the servers are, you stupid, Irish bh.

On the surface I come across as a miserable git. I am not, I am just a bit cautious about getting to know people because of moving about a lot from job to job.
On a recent walk round a bit of banter started between the site manager, the H&S woman and me about looking miserable etc. She then asked "is everything alright", followed by " Oh I nearly said I don't mean with you, I couldn't care less about that I just mean with the job".
I properly thought she was out of order at the comment as I know mental health is a big issue these days and nobody should be ashamed about owning up about it.
So, that was it, getting one over on a Health and Safety type person was a chance I was not going to miss. We get nothing but hassle off them.
I told her what I thought of her comment in a nice way, didn't raise my voice, and just told her that no matter that she said before to nullify it she said it so it must have been in her head. (Oh I nearly said...).
At one point she took a step towards me waving her finger so I gestured for her to back off.
I was informed later that she was heavily into studying peoples behaviour and thought she was a big expert on the subject and was close to tears back in the office saying she could not believe she was having to explain herself.
At one point in the conversation she turned to the manager and expected him to back her up but he didn't and said "well you did say it".
She frantically wrote a report about what happened while it was fresh in her mind just in case I took it further. No intention of doing because I can't do with the hassle. I had made my point.

In my day they were called the Personnel Department and they did as they were told. Then those trendy Americans invented the HR tag and they got all full of their own self importance and went power mad.
Good job they didn't get yellow jackets....
