Here we are again, guy we have known for years we think would be good client facing and he is not working so thought it was a match made in heaven but he wants double what we thought for the role (maybe 80% more to be fair).
I`ll make him an offer with bonus`s and reviews and performance rewards etc but the nice feeling I had has soured somewhat based on the fact he knows were young and its a good opportunity to get it whilst its growing etc.
Maybe grasping all you can is the way of the world these days.
Are you asking him to accept a lower salary than he would otherwise receive?

If so, what is the incentive for him to accept a lower rate whilst the company grows? Where is the payoff that makes him better off in the long run than if he'd taken a job elsewhere?

He is currently not working, the glass door guide is £5k less than we are offering, the guy wants twice the guide.
Not many decent web agencies paying above guide round here.
We will make him the offer and if he accepts that’s good if not we look again.

Sounds like you're being very reasonable.

Maybe it's just his negotiating style biggrin

Maybe you rate the opportunity higher than they do, and are using it as an excuse to get someone cheap.

Why does it matter that the company is growing if it pays too little, are you planning to double the wages when it does grow?

Why would you not grasp all you can?!

Just flicked through, do you not set your candidates tests?

My first web job i was given a jpg and told to turn it into a website, it was then tested and validated before they would even consider me.

About 5/6 years ago I was in between jobs, I was offered a role for a basic of £12,000 and then a profit share for customers I brought in and retained, I declined purely based on £12,000 was a piss-take and I'm not a salesman.

One thing I have found is there are a lot of creative web agency's in the North West, Last one I worked for cared little of my skills, actually done no testing what-so-ever but they had the idea of pile them high and pay them little too.

In your shoes I would be offering a test to prove ability, or even freelance projects which they can do in their spare time for 1-2 months to ensure the fit is good and the work is of standard, anybody with confidence in their work would be happy to do it.

Or that's where he values his skill set, and is not interested in working for less?

Perfectly reasonable. Same as if you need to hire a tradesman for a job, they tell you what they are going to charge and you can take it or leave it.

Its not dev, weve not had any issues with dev and its quite easy to salary match (experience, ability) this is a client facing role/
