Good Morning Folks

I hope you're all well. Once again many thanks for your advice, edc.

I have been asking some staff members who have been working there for a few years, and it seems that the company doesn't seem to have regular appraisal meetings with line managers, and if I were to ask for one, I may be seen as the odd one out or a 'trouble maker'.

I do feel a victim of my own success as Zetec-S has mentioned in his post, sine a lot of team members have said that I am the best credit controller that they have had for years !!

As The Green Triangle also mentioned in one of the responses above, I have also thought about talking to the management accounting team about opportunities. However, do you think this is being disrespectful to my line manager and she may think I'm a bit of a trouble maker and try and find ways of getting rid of me?? That would leave me in a much worse position - no job with a big mortgage to pay off !! However, getting involved in management accounting, business analysis, and accrual & prepayments is most definitely what I want to do. However, I do want to work in industry and not a practice. I have very good excel skills.

As edc mentioned, I have also thought about applying for assistant accountant roles. However, the only accounting experience I have is credit control. That is the only thing that is stopping me, so what would you advice that I do in this case? Apply for 'Trainee Assistant Accountant' roles? At my age - 50??

I do appreciate all the advice that you kind folks are giving me, but just want a bit more advice, if ok with you??

Thank you.

There's no harm in trying. Some organisations won't consider you, others might. I'd be inclined to look at Public Sector as they tend to be less discriminating on age grounds. I'd also suggest having a look at Appreniceships (either level 3 or Level 7).

Seems like she is currently ignoring you, why are you worried about being disrespectful?

If you think that talking to another manager about gaining some experience might result in an opportunity then you should consider it; presumably they would want to talk to your line manager about it but maybe she'll start taking you more seriously that way.

It doesn't sound like there's any gain for her in trying to get rid of you if you're well on top of your job; not that it's so easy to get rid of good staff, or replace them!

Any of the above might result in a firm conversation with your boss but I'd say that's well overdue anyway - stand your ground, remind her that you've been asking for this for some time and she has done nothing to help.

Good Morning Folks

I hope you're all well and once again, many thanks indeed for you contributions.

My manager spoke to me on Thursday and decided to give me more work of the same type, which I wasn't happy about. I didn't say no because I didn't want to upset her, plus the fact that I asked for more work myself initially.

However, she did say she will speak to the Financial Controller in the next few weeks to see if I can get involved in more accounting work and what's more, the assistant management accountant is going on maternity leave at the end of September, so there could be an opening for me there !!

So, it doesn't sound that bad after all !!
