When the incident happened just south of Bedford I phoned the duty fitter at Midland Road to tell him what was going on, he said 'iit sounds like you've killed it mate'' paperbag

Just looked in my work diary, it was 6L44 Tunstead to Bow on Friday 13th July (!), I worked it from Kettering down to Cricklewood, with a 'slight pause' south of Bedford biggrin

Always fancied being a train driver though as a kid I was told you had to be in a "railway family" to stand a chance of getting any job on the railways so I never pursued it. Seems anyone can apply these days but what would the chances of someone in their mid-40s getting in as a trainee be?

Your age is no barrier to becoming a train driver and should not hold you back from applying.

In fact, you may have more relevant experience that can help your application. I'm tube and we regularly have the 'more mature' trainee join us. It simply isn't an issue nowadays.

All train companies recruitment is run or overseen by their HR dept and they are scrupulous in adhering to relevant discrimation guidelines. The days of getting the nod from a manager are long gone.

There is still a small element of your last sentence going on these days, when drivers move from one company to another management do tend to 'ask around', a lot of them know each other anyway. They'll ask ''do you know such and such, what's he / she like..?'' It's nothing like it used to be in the old days though.

One of our Drivers was taken on at fifty four years old having done thirty years as a copper, so the age thing is no barrier.
