Think how much exposure 10k of facebook advertising would get. Or even 2k of advertising 2k of equipment and keep the family fed for a few months while you build your own business.

Franchises can be good if they offer a unique product or specialist service but window cleaning they are just selling you the gear at an inflated price. A lad I know was doing the same thing with detailing it was just a way to shift slightly inflated price gear and a van.

I get regular requests on my local FB asking for window cleaners too so no doubt there's demand.

I would seriously try going it alone its less risky and cheaper. You could even make a start working saturday/sunday to get a foothold and remain in your old job for a while. Local services and facebook are a match made in heaven so I would regard Facebook as your franchise partner.

Make sure you get a proper way of taking repeat electronic payments set up (izettle or similar) so you aren't chasing people for money. Do a month in advance from the first visit so nobody can get into arrears and you're good to go.

Most window cleaners I wouldn't trust to come back if they were paid a month in advance.

Actually Izettle you can SMS a payment link to your customer so no absolute commitment but you still don't allow people credit.

But what about all these pensioners that do not do online banking and pay cash? The franchise in I may be signing up with accept cash, cheques and online bank transfers.

Most cleaners use an app that tracks jobs and payments etc. It shows the debts owing etc and window cleaners always work in arrears.

I can well understand MYOB's point of view. There's always cheaper ways to do things but sometimes it's better to go with what you feel comfortable with, whether there's a cheaper way or not.

Cheers, I do appreciate people's views on the negatives of franchising but the reality is that I need to start earning immediately and have reassurances that I'll be earning decent money immediately. Financially, it will be similar to working for an employer in that they will get a proportion of my earnings but from a lifestyle and convenience perspective, it fits my requirements.

The franchise contract renews bi-annually so I wouldn't be tied in indefinitely. I can review again in 2 years about whether to branch out independently.

I would go through their T&Cs with a fine tooth comb (i'm a contracts manager). If you bail out after 6 months...18 months...do you get any money back? What if they only supply you with £400 a week work? What comeback do you have if you wanted to make £1k a week? Do they supply a van etc? Some i have seen say you have to supply a van so another expense, fuel etc isn't covered! Also on the one linked it states 1,500 a month....not a week!! Your expecting £6k a month cleaning windows, as you said you would hope to take in 1500 a week?! No chance!
For me personally i would just set up on my own, i think you will be throwing your £10k away and won't see much of it back if it doesn't go well...!

MYOB, Please do this. I think you’re likely to have spent £10,000 and be very disappointed.

I'm currently out with the owner learning the trade. He earns between 400 and 500 per day. I have seen his books and online app which record everything.

I've reviewed the contract, I spent 20 years drafting and signing off commercial contracts in the civil service. I've no concerns. They will be contractually obliged to get me business to the amount I decide. They have said it's for me to decide on the figure, no lower or upper limits. If they do not provide me with the work, then there is recourse for breach of contract. This is something they said they don't want to happen.

I provide my own transport, which I already have and is paid for.

If I decide to terminate prematurely, I can sell my franchise.

The link someone provided earlier is not the one I'll be signing up with. I'll be signing up with someone I've known for years and I trust him. He wants to help me out given my personal situation. I've gone through a messy divorce, have no home and I need to get cracking on to provide for my children. He knows my kids and wants me in a situation where I can home them and give them everything they need.

The company on the previously provided link, would not give me what I need, and nor is there the "personal" interest.

Our window cleaner is here for about half an hour, we have a 5 bedroom house and we pay him £20.

Bearing in mind travel time between jobs (although he has several close together near us) it wont come to £4-500 a day.

So his company takes in 400-500 a day or him personally?? What about the other guys who have bought into his franchise, what do they take home?
I'm in the wrong business obviously if he's taking home that amount a day cleaning windows!

It's primarily residential. I'm out with him daily and am reviewing his app which is tracking his progress.

There are days when his rounds are concentrated in a couple of villages, which are big houses and he can earn 450 on average per day. In more urban areas, with smaller properties, he is still earning around the same amount.

His other franchisees are earning what they have asked for. Mostly between 800 and 1500 per week. The lower amounts are part timers. I've met most of them, and they are all very happy.

There are some properties that he charges 60, then there are some that are only 10. There's a mixture, and a couple of commercial properties are in the mix too.

In the winter, the daily amount drops to around 300 per day due to the shorter days. According to his app, he earnt almost 70k last year just from window cleaning. He is also earning off other franchisees which in all likelihood, possibly doubles his 70k. He starts when he wants, takes days off when he wants, enjoys the banter with the customers and it's a very relaxing day compared to my previous career.

Now I know I won't earn as much as him but the potential is there. I did not believe there is money in window cleaning and I'm very surprised at the potential. I'll be happy to get up to 1k per week in due course, then determine if I can increase my workload around child care.

I'll update you all in due course.

I’ve worked in franchising and I’d be very surprised if you could sign an agreement where the franchisor is required to provide its franchisees with a level of business they request.

They may provide leads but actual business?

If business were that easy to come by they wouldn’t be selling franchises, they’d be running it in house.

I’d say be very cautious but good luck.

You're a franchisor's dream biggrin Such a glowing recommendation for the next possible franchisee.
Aside from that, have you actually cleaned any windows yet as part of your trial?

There's nearly every post, aside from yours, that suggests you shouldn't take a franchise and set up on your own if you want to pursue a service type job ie window cleaning. But you can prove every poster here wrong? You are ( from reading your posts) paying £10K upfront, providing your own vehicle and paying a monthly franchise fee too?

Look forward to your updates then.

Thank you, but yes, they do indeed provide the requested business. It's in their contracts.

I posted a few weeks ago about a job i had applied for end of last year. well I got an Email a few weeks ago offering temp work until the end of next march with a good possibility of becoming permanent . I had forgot all about it to be honest.

I had to go for a look around last monday and fill in paperwork, take documents and have a chat and looks like a nice office with good people . the hours are great, money pretty good for Leeds. and easy to get to for me. Today i got a call offering me a start date and i am over the moon to be back into work ! its a civil service job dealing with commercial business rates etc. I have no experience of this at all so a new challenge and new skills to learn and at 51 thats a good thing. Just shows keep at it , keep applying , you never know what will happen .

500 a day is that the full ponz....erm franchise or his personal? That's a lot of money for cleaning windows. I reckon even a demon widow cleaner would be doing ok earning half that.

If something sounds to good etc I would be highly sceptical of these numbers.
