if you are worried about it on your cv, set up a ltd company say you started a business didn't work out. etc having some sort of income really makes a massive difference to everything.

I've been following this thread and find it interesting and almost somewhat depressing. I feel bad for some of the guys here who are genuinely trying to go out and find work.

As a suggestion, I used to work for Sky and they usually only advertise on their careers website. Check to see if there's any Sky Retail sales jobs near you- £25k basic with uncapped commission. They don't employ on experience, just personality and whether they like you or not/be suited to the job.

+1 i do manual work( 3 months out of work, bills mounting up,) a few guys i work with have degrees, just can't get a job. they want money. I think waiting for the right job, after 9 months, is very poor advice, any job gives you a confidence you don't get signing on.
I've worked for two employers who went to great length to dig up excuses to sack people (because it's illegal to do it directly) after finding out they'd been searching for, applying for and interviewing for new jobs.

They can also make it very hard to take time off for interviews, a lot of "non-office" jobs ban people from using mobile phones, some bosses won't allow you privacy to take a call, and most have very restrictive break times. All of which make it near impossible to receive calls about jobs during work hours, and just as difficult to find the time to speak on the phone about a job.

It really isn't as simple as job taking whatever job you can find.

Don't just apply for anything, as you have skills. Low paid (casual?) employment won't last, and do your head in.
Plus they'll think you're overqualified to boot. wink
i see some say you just have to take whats available.

we all have different experiences and live in areas with different levels of employment/demand etc. so you cant pigeon hole people but as this poster is saying iv have been for interviews and put in application after application (using the "just take whats available" approach ) only to be told the role is too junior for me or I am over qualified or this is more of an entry level role blah blah blah.

believe me - if Aldi gave me a job tomorrow stacking tins on a shelf I would take it.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, have you applied for bank work at your local NHS Hospital. Have to register then can apply for bank/temporary jobs. Mostly admin roles if not clinically qualified. Roles are full time or part time.

The links below explains:

It is difficult but can be done, like anything really it doesn't come on a plate.

I had 5 months out of work some years ago and in hindsight I should have done a bit of work for a local charity shop or something just to get me out of the house and doing stuff. Not working was great for a bit, I put up a greenhouse and got loads of little jobs around the house and garden done, but after a few months I found myself getting up later and later, and spending more time watching TV or playing on my PC.

Apologies as I haven't read the full thread but I dip in every now and then and feel your frustration.

Have you tried any care homes in your area?

I work with a big care home group in the SE and they are *always* advertising for applicants. It's not the most well paid or glamorous work I'm sure but fairly easy to get into once you've got past the DBS check I believe.

Good luck,

Phil

I've been off about 3 weeks now. It's not really a bad time to be off with Christmas around the corner. I have a 4 year old daughter so am enjoying the time I get with her. She finishes school tomorrow so I'm looking forward to that. No lie ins, even though I'm off work. hehe

Bills do need to be paid though so I am actively job hunting. Ok for now, but do need to find something sharpish in the new year.

i want this thread to stay as its been until now as positive true informative and upbeat as possible but that last sentence has me thinking. Personally I am self aware enough to know that nothing ever comes on a plate. I cant speak for others but to my mind I cannot think of one other guy here that even thinks these things come on a plate and find the comment less than complimentary or even applicable here. Getting things on a plate might be the way for certain sectors of society but saying it here will I think largely fall on deaf ears as people seem to be putting in the leg work and then some. theres a hint of having a dig hidden away under the veil there but maybe its just me interpreting the comment the wrong way than was intended.....

Does the promotion create an approriate vacancy?

Me!

Finished on Friday and the site closed yesterday. As the site was temporary they said it wouldn't lead to anything. However there is something at another permanent location. Only 16 or 20 hours a week for up to 6 months, nothing else listed currently in my region. I've applied today.

I've a couple of other opportunities more suited to my background which are going on in the background (at a snails pace) but this will be something in the meantime.

Every single person at my place part time has gone onto full time contracts , providing they want .

Then there's always trying to transfer over to romec who look after the sorting machines / buildings .

Two jobs are up for grabs although the one I feel more interested in has also been applied for by somebody already working there........

we will see. still not heard yet from the interview on the 14th Dec. so thats been 2 weeks now.

Not always the case unfortunately, sometimes they promote someone in title and not actual role, usually if they're doing a job nobody else wants to do, like working in goods in/out. I've met no less than 3 "packing manager"s in my time, managers by title, no staff to manage, no pay increase, same old job, different title.

theyve come back today.

short email thanking me for attending the interview on the 14th dec but they are now reviewing their "recruitment needs" and will be in touch again shortly whatever the hell that means. they were screaming out for people before xmas now the demands are different (and its not seasonal work) . oh to be a fly on the wall in their HR dept.

Id love to tell them to get lost in all honesty as the salary is paltry at £17k but I have nothing else in the pipeline atm and a mortgage to pay.

its painful being out of work and even more painful being put through a series of emotional ups and downs. you feel like they are dangling you on a piece of string at times.

in other news..........the jobcentre have agreed to send me on a CPC periodic course for commercial driving so I get my CPC under the grandfather rights as I have held my licence prior to 1997 and can at least apply for driving jobs that insist on a CPC card. thats due to start on the 15th jan. and is 35 hours.
