Why isn't the apparently awesome teachers pension scheme retaining people?
Because they are 25 and won't receive it till they are 65.

Go and drive a train, seriously I know several train drivers who came from an educational background, plus an ex trianee solicitor and a few ex BiL. Took me 40 years(16 to 56) before I threw the towel in .If you don't mind a 24-7 shift pattern, you do at least leave each day without any baggage. Monies good, even the trainee rate is just above a probationer teaching rate. Fully qualified the rates go up for the next 3 years in most companies with the top line in some companies being £60k plus. Drivers need managers so there's a line of progression if thats what you fancy , driver instructor is another option, good if you like to stay "hands on" as you'll still be in the main roster but on a slightly higher rate of pay.
I married a teacher, so I get where you're coming from .

I think there's options to start it earlier if they want like a private pension.

I've considered Private/Public schools but as a mere working-class peasant I don't think they'd be able to look past a) my accent b) that I currently work in a school about as far from the Private sector as possible.
You’re letting your prejudices of their assumed prejudices stop you. wink Give it a go...
A friend of mine who sounds as Norfolk as They come, and previously worked in poor to average schools is now head of science at a local private school.

You’ll never know unless you give it a try.
