I take it you've trawled all the Reading / Thames Valley tech firms with Bus Dev divisions, there are a myriad but their German speakers are their most prized assets, we struggle to hire German speakers into the Reading office and most are in London for us, also tech sales.

Thanks, yes trawling as we speak!

Yes it seems like there's a lot of competition out there as a lot of our EU friends have understandably left the country.

Spreading the net high and wide hence PH post.

Symantec Green Park are hemorrhaging people since the Broadcom takeover, we've interviewed most the good ones and Symantec overpaid to a degree so they all have inflated opinions of their true worth ....

I'll get onto Sales Navigator now and see if I can find any of your leftovers smile

Out of interest, what were they paying? In effect this is an internal sales job with the odd trip to a German trade show

Unfortunately based on my position here and my boss knows my PH credentials no way I can answer that, but you'll see a theme ...

Hi,

A bit unrelated but is being a German Speaker a valuable asset? I am a German Speaker having lived in Germany for 20 years but have never looked at German Speaker jobs but my work experience may not lend itself to any German Speaking roles.

Regards

I have some personal experience on this. I graduated from university in Languages (Russian and Serbo-Croat), after doing A-Levels in French and German. Without too much trumpet blowing my French and German were, and remain, pretty good. I went into Export Sales jobs in the 90s, and then IT Support jobs requiring languages thereafter. I found that in the real world jobs requiring language skills actually paid LESS than comparable jobs which didn't. Why? Well, my thoughts are that languages are seen as a female skill, and we all know what happens to women in the workplace when it comes to pay. They are also seen as an immigrant skill, again, these people get paid less, and even in the case of younger workers expect this situation.

I found my languages to be useful in getting jobs early in my working life, but experience I gained from those jobs has led me to more lucrative job choices which don't need languages (I've remained in IT and taken up Project Management), and I don't use them in work any more. Which is a shame, as I'd like to, but perversely they can be a barrier to earnings, whilst being a skill which can help in getting a job in the first place. I often get people say - wow, your language skills are amazing, you must be able to write your own cheque! Nope. Not in my experience.

I don't know what the OP is offering in terms of salary for this particular role - but I'd be surprised if the need for language skills actually meant the financial reward would be any higher than a comparable non-language job.

So German might help you get a job, but don't expect it to pay better than other work. All IMHO of course. Others may have different experience.

P.S I'm based in the Thames Valley if the OP wants to offer me 100k a year! wink
